This is Reserve shiraz, only made in the best years and in tiny quantities. You’ll find layers of dark fruit - plum, blackberry and cherry compote - with spice, dark chocolate, earthy notes and a savoury edge that speaks to both the old vines and McLaren Vale itself. It’s full-bodied but not clumsy, plush but structured, with tannins that are firm yet polished. The finish is long and layered, the kind that makes you pause before you even think about the next sip and just take a moment to enjoy yourself.

Why do we love this wine?

Some of the fruit here comes off a McLaren Vale vineyard planted back in 1910 - gnarly old bush vines that have been tended by three generations of the same family. It’s a patch of dirt with deep clay soils, east-west rows to shield the fruit from the harsh summer sun, and roots that stretch forever thanks to access to good water. Translation? Vines that dig deep and deliver concentration, balance and serious power. This wine has helped put this producer firmly on the map - you'll know what we men as soon as you see the label. It’s approachable enough to drink young if you can’t wait, but built for the cellar if you’ve got patience. Either way, it’s a reserve-level shiraz with history in its bones and proof in the pudding.

Frequently Asked Questions

This shiraz features fruit from century-old bush vines planted in 1910, representing some of McLaren Vale's most treasured viticultural heritage. These gnarly old vines have developed extensive root systems over 110+ years, allowing them to access deep water sources and minerals that younger plantings simply cannot reach. The east-west row orientation protects the grapes from harsh afternoon sun, while the deep clay soils provide excellent water retention and mineral complexity that translates directly into the wine's concentrated flavour profile.

This reserve-level shiraz offers excellent versatility in terms of when to enjoy it. While it's approachable enough to drink now if you're eager to experience its rich, full-bodied character, the wine's structure and concentration from those old vines means it's built for extended cellaring. The 2019 vintage will continue developing complexity over the next 10-15 years, with the tannins softening and secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earth emerging alongside the primary chocolate, plum, and meaty notes.

The 96-point Wine Orbit score and Five Star rating indicate this shiraz sits in the top tier of Australian wine quality, representing exceptional value at this price point. Wine Orbit's scoring system is particularly respected for Australian wines, and scores above 95 points are reserved for truly outstanding examples. The 4.2 Vivino rating across all vintages suggests consistent quality from this producer, indicating this isn't a one-off success but rather part of a proven track record of excellence.

Serve this shiraz at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves without the alcohol becoming overpowering. Decant for at least 30 minutes before serving to help integrate the rich tannins and unlock the wine's meaty, chocolate, and plum characteristics. The wine's full-bodied nature and high concentration make it perfect for pairing with robust dishes like grilled lamb, aged beef, or rich game meats that can match its intensity and complement its savoury elements.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, combined with its diverse soil types including the deep clay found in this vineyard, creates perfect conditions for shiraz to develop both power and elegance. The region's proximity to the ocean provides cooling influences that help maintain acidity while allowing full ripening, resulting in wines with the rich, full-bodied character this bottle displays. The area's winemaking heritage, dating back to the 1830s, has established it as one of Australia's premier shiraz regions, with old vine sites like this 1910 planting representing the pinnacle of the region's potential.
