Blackberries, dark plums, spice, dark chocolate, Barossa. This wine just couldn't be from anywhere else. The mouthfeel alone is a dead give away, fine tannins, a good lick of oak and pure silk on the palate. Barossa lovers, look no further - this is the one.

Why do we love this wine?

The fruit for this punchy wine comes off of a tiny 45 year old vineyard that was originally planted with cuttings from an original (and world-famous) 1880 planted vineyard. Now, we know this is a bit nerdy but hey, let us cook... What makes these two vineyards so special is the uniquely thicker skins of the shiraz grapes. With vines this old, it would be expected that yields are very low, however, with less disease pressure and more flavour packed and stored within the berries (because of the thicker skins), you get the best of both worlds. Of course, thicker skins would normally mean bigger, scarier tannins - lucky for us these vineyards are known fro producing fine-grained, silky tannins. Ok, that was heavily nerdy, but you get the point. This wine tells a story of time and place and we are HERE to HEAR it!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz comes from a remarkable 45-year-old vineyard planted with cuttings from an 1880 vineyard, creating a direct genetic link to Barossa's winemaking heritage. The old vines produce grapes with uniquely thick skins that concentrate flavour while maintaining silky, fine-grained tannins rather than harsh ones. This combination of historical provenance and exceptional fruit quality earned it 95 points from Andrew Caillard, reflecting its status as a truly distinctive Barossa expression.

The 45-year-old vines naturally produce lower yields, which concentrates the flavours into fewer, more intensely flavoured berries. The thick-skinned grapes store more colour compounds and tannins, creating the wine's full-bodied structure and rich blood plum characteristics. Older vines also develop deeper root systems that access different soil layers, contributing to the earthy complexity that balances the oaky richness in this wine.

This rich, oaky Shiraz with blood plum and earthy notes pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with mushroom sauces. The wine's full body and silky tannins can handle robust flavours like aged cheeses, barbecued ribs, or hearty stews. The earthy undertones also complement game meats and dishes with truffle or other umami-rich ingredients.

While this 2019 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its approachable silky tannins, it has excellent cellaring potential due to its old-vine concentration and full-bodied structure. The thick-skinned fruit provides natural preservation compounds, and wines from heritage vineyards like this often develop greater complexity over 5-10 years. You can enjoy it immediately for its vibrant fruit character or cellar it to allow the earthy and oaky elements to integrate further.

Black Market Deals typically indicate exceptional value wines from boutique producers who prefer to remain anonymous, often due to existing distribution agreements or brand positioning. This allows wine lovers to access premium, single-vineyard Shiraz from established producers at significantly reduced prices. The 95-point rating and heritage vineyard source suggest this is likely from a well-regarded Barossa winery offering their wine through alternative channels.
