Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This particular vineyard, in the Rowland Flat area of the Barossa, sits at 380m above sea-level. At this altitude, Barossa vineyards traditionally produce much lower yields creating highly concentrated fruit of exceptional quality. From the first whiff it's quite apparent, this is a really smart wine. A perfumed nose of the expected dark fruits with floral elements of rose petal and violets. On the palate, juicy plums, dark chocolate, pepper, spice and, of course, a long, smooth, oak-driven finish. This drop is as intense as it is complex and will continue to impress for many years to come. Very, very impressive.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz comes from a single vineyard in Rowland Flat at 380m elevation, which is significantly higher than most Barossa vineyards that sit around 250-300m. The altitude creates cooler conditions and naturally reduces yields, concentrating flavours and producing more elegant tannin structure. Combined with old vines and the distinctive Barossa terroir, this creates exceptional fruit intensity while maintaining the region's signature power and richness.

Given its full-bodied structure, old vine concentration, and oak-driven finish, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years from vintage. The 2019 vintage was particularly favourable in Barossa, producing wines with balanced acidity and robust tannins that will soften beautifully over time. The wine's complexity will continue developing, with tertiary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earth emerging alongside the current dark fruit profile.

The wine's intense dark chocolate and pepper notes make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes like slow-cooked lamb shanks, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses. The plum and blackberry flavours complement game meats beautifully, while the oak-driven finish can handle bold flavours like barbecued meats with smoky marinades. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom-based dishes or dark chocolate desserts that echo the wine's cocoa notes.

The dual 96-point scores from Ray Jordan and Ken Gargett reflect the wine's exceptional balance of power and elegance, which is rare in Barossa Shiraz. The combination of old vines, single vineyard sourcing, and optimal elevation creates complexity that critics value highly. The wine demonstrates classic Barossa characteristics while showing restraint and finesse, plus the floral elements of rose petal and violets add an unexpected sophistication that elevates it above typical regional examples.

Serve this Shiraz at 16-18°C to showcase its full-bodied character without overwhelming the palate with alcohol heat. Decanting for 1-2 hours before serving will help integrate the oak and allow the perfumed aromatics to fully express themselves. The wine's intensity means it benefits from breathing time, which will soften the tannins and reveal the subtle floral notes mentioned in the tasting profile.
