Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

We spend a lot of time in McLaren Vale. Why you ask? Our mofos just can't get enough of the shiraz that grows there. So it's a never ending (albeit enjoyable) task to keep the hits coming. Maybe 'what have you done for me lately' is a bit too much, but we know that thirst is unquenchable. Here's another one to scratch that itch, a single vineyard drop from 35-year old vines that sings of black cherry, cocoa powder and oak. We know you're into it.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for shiraz, producing wines with intense fruit concentration and distinctive regional character. The area's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity. This 35-year-old vineyard exemplifies the region's ability to produce complex, age-worthy shiraz with the perfect balance of power and elegance that has made McLaren Vale one of Australia's premier shiraz regions.

The 35-year-old vines in this vineyard produce significantly lower yields than younger plantings, concentrating flavours and creating more complex wine. Mature vine root systems penetrate deeper into the soil, accessing different mineral layers and providing greater resilience during dry periods. This results in grapes with more intense flavour compounds and better natural balance, explaining why this wine achieved 95 points from Wine Orbit and demonstrates the hallmark depth that old vine shiraz is renowned for.

This rich, full-bodied shiraz with its black cherry, cocoa powder, and oak characteristics pairs beautifully with red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked braised dishes. The wine's chocolate and liquorice notes complement game meats, while its robust structure can stand up to strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese. The plum flavours also make it an excellent match for barbecued meats with fruit-based glazes or rich, tomato-based pasta dishes.

While this 2019 shiraz is drinking beautifully now, showing excellent integration of fruit, oak, and tannins, it has the structure and concentration to cellar well for another 8-12 years. The full-bodied nature and old vine intensity suggest it will develop additional complexity with time, revealing more savoury and earthy characteristics. If you enjoy primary fruit flavours and the current chocolate and oak integration, drink it within the next 3-4 years, but patient collectors will be rewarded with a more nuanced wine if cellared properly.

A 95-point rating from Wine Orbit places this shiraz in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that significantly exceeds expectations for its price point. This score, combined with the Gold medal from Wine Showcase, suggests the wine demonstrates perfect varietal expression, excellent balance, and remarkable complexity for a single vineyard McLaren Vale shiraz. Such high ratings typically indicate a wine that showcases both immediate appeal and long-term ageing potential, making it exceptional value in the current market.
