Beechworth is among the most exciting Australian wine regions for us. What’s produced is often done so in small batches, and with great care - across the board the wines are, in a word, outstanding.

Why do we love this wine?

This is a beautiful cool climate shiraz, softly fruited and supple on the palate. The fruit is lifted and bright. Blueberries, plums and bramble lead out, with richer redcurrant and mulberry following. The acid is pitch perfect, nervy but driving. The tannin is rigid enough to frame the fruit without becoming cumbersome. This is the work of an excellent winemaking team in a leading growing region in Beechworth. We’re stoked to be working with this label, and we know you’ll love it.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Beechworth's cool climate produces shiraz with lifted, bright fruit characteristics rather than the jammy, concentrated flavours typical of warmer regions. The cooler conditions allow for longer ripening periods, resulting in wines with better acid retention and more elegant tannin structure. This creates the 'nervy but driving' acidity and supple palate texture that distinguishes this wine from the bold, powerful shiraz styles of regions like Barossa Valley.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature at around 16-18°C to highlight its fresh fruit character and balanced acidity. The medium body and textured, savoury profile make it versatile for food pairing - try it with grilled lamb, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the bramble and mulberry flavours while softening the structured tannins.

This designation from James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion represents the highest tier of winery recognition in Australia, awarded to fewer than 100 producers nationwide. Five-star wineries consistently produce wines of exceptional quality across their range, demonstrating outstanding winemaking expertise and vineyard management. This rating indicates you're getting wine from one of Australia's most respected and accomplished producers.

The wine's rigid tannin structure and pitch-perfect acidity suggest good cellaring potential over the next 5-8 years. As it ages, the bright blueberry and plum notes will evolve into more complex secondary flavours, while the tannins will integrate further with the fruit. However, given its current approachable style and beautiful fruit expression, it's also drinking beautifully now for those who prefer younger, more vibrant wine characteristics.

The white pepper spice and mineral backbone make this shiraz excellent with dishes that echo these earthy, savoury elements. Try it with pepper-crusted steak, wild mushroom dishes, or charcuterie featuring salami and aged hard cheeses. The mineral character also pairs beautifully with roasted root vegetables or dishes incorporating herbs like rosemary and thyme, which complement rather than compete with the wine's natural spice profile.
