Rustic, earthy depth and power. This is expertly composed; dark cherry and fennel swirl around a deep bramble and red currant. Mocha, leather and French oak nuance lurk at the periphery but this is The Fruit Show, ticket for one please.

Why do we love this wine?

A stunning wine. Heathcote shiraz is very much a category that speaks loudly and proudly of place, as all great wine should. Ancient soils bleeding complexity and depth into the fruit, warm, consistent summers allowing ripeness to develop gradually and deftly, and cool mountain breezes providing respite and refrain where bright acidity can be nurtured and retained. There is nothing simple or one-track about the fruit, it is richly complex and packed full of intrigue. The full spectrum of fruit on display - ripe red berries, high tone blue plum, brash and imposing black currant. Seems kind of early to say it but... my favourite of the category for 2023.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Heathcote's ancient Cambrian soils, some of the oldest on Earth, impart exceptional mineral complexity that you simply can't replicate elsewhere. The region's unique combination of warm, consistent summers and cool mountain breezes creates ideal conditions for developing both power and elegance in shiraz. This terroir produces wines with remarkable depth and a distinctive earthy backbone that sets them apart from the more fruit-forward styles found in warmer regions like Barossa Valley.

The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as exceptional across Australia, particularly for shiraz, due to ideal growing conditions with moderate temperatures and well-timed rainfall. This vintage allowed for extended hang time, resulting in wines with remarkable concentration and balanced acidity. The 95-point Halliday rating reflects the vintage's quality, as 2019 produced some of the most cellar-worthy and complex shiraz expressions in recent memory.

The wine's rich blackcurrant and earthy characteristics make it perfect for robust dishes like slow-braised lamb shanks, grilled kangaroo, or aged beef steaks. The full-bodied palate weight and complex fruit spectrum can stand up to strong flavours like blue cheese, while the bright acidity cuts through rich, fatty meats beautifully. Consider pairing with Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs like rosemary and thyme, which echo the wine's earthy undertones.

Premium Heathcote shiraz from exceptional vintages like 2019 typically develops beautifully over 10-15 years, with this wine likely reaching its peak around 2027-2030. The ancient soil influence and full-bodied structure suggest excellent aging potential, during which the intense fruit flavours will integrate with developing tertiary notes of leather, spice, and forest floor. While drinking beautifully now, patience will be rewarded with increased complexity and silky tannin integration.

A 95-point Halliday rating places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, representing less than 3% of wines reviewed annually by Australia's most respected wine critic. This score indicates exceptional varietal character, perfect balance, and outstanding length of flavour that distinguishes it from good wines. James Halliday's ratings are particularly meaningful for Australian wines as they reflect deep understanding of local terroir and winemaking excellence, making this a benchmark example of Heathcote shiraz.
