Why do we love this wine?

This premium South Aussie shiraz is everything you’d expect from the style and more. AND, in this case, more is definitely more! More fruit, more oak, more flavour and more power. If you like them big, then get in line. Full of plums, blackberries and puckering cranberries. This vibrant fruit is supported by oaky nuances from nearly two years in new French oak. There’s a luscious vanilla note and soft tannins that are well integrated into the fruit. When a wine delivers that much more above its pay grade, you can’t ask it for any more.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This McLaren Vale Shiraz has earned exceptional critical acclaim with 95 points from Vinous and 93 points from Wine Enthusiast, indicating it's likely from a premium producer selling well above its offered price point. The mystery format allows access to high-end South Australian Shiraz that would typically cost significantly more if the brand were revealed. With nearly two years in new French oak and full-bodied intensity, you're getting restaurant-quality wine at a fraction of the usual cost.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for producing powerful, fruit-driven Shiraz with natural acidity. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, allowing for extended ripening that develops the intense plum and blackberry flavours described in this wine. McLaren Vale Shiraz is renowned for its ability to handle substantial oak treatment while maintaining fruit integrity, explaining why this wine successfully carries nearly two years of new French oak without being overwhelmed.

This powerful Shiraz demands equally robust companions - think char-grilled steaks, slow-cooked lamb shanks, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The wine's puckering cranberry notes and integrated tannins make it excellent with gamey meats like venison or duck, while the vanilla oak complements barbecued meats beautifully. Rich, tomato-based dishes like osso buco or hearty beef stews will harmonise perfectly with the wine's fruit intensity and full-bodied structure.

Premium McLaren Vale Shiraz from 2019, especially one scoring 95 points from Vinous, typically has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years from vintage. The substantial new French oak treatment and full-bodied structure suggest this wine is built for aging, with tannins that will soften and integrate further over time. The 2019 vintage was generally excellent in South Australia, providing the fruit concentration and natural acidity needed for long-term development, though it's already drinking beautifully now.

Nearly two years in new French oak is substantial treatment that indicates serious winemaking investment and a wine built to handle such intensity. French oak typically imparts more subtle, spicy characteristics compared to American oak, contributing the described vanilla notes along with hints of cedar and baking spices. The fact that these oak elements are described as 'well integrated' suggests the fruit was concentrated enough to balance the wood influence, creating complexity rather than overwhelming the wine's natural character.
