You could call it this gateaux in a glass. Blackberry and raspberry are first out of the gate, followed by an entourage of chocolate, vanilla, black pepper and Chinese five spice.

Why do we love this wine?

So James Halliday gave this 95 points. That's kinda a big deal. And it's six years old. Also a big deal. And it's from a highly-regarded single site with deep ancient soils. Yep, you guessed it...another big deal. This Vale producer, one you surely know and love, gets a bit nerdy about soil. Fear not, there won't be a test later, but what they can craft drawing on their obsession with soil is second to none. The proof is right there in the bottle. This is a damn good wine with incredible pedigree. It's floral, velvety, minerally and herbal. You'd be doing yourself a disservice to pass it by.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2018 vintage represents six years of careful cellaring, allowing this McLaren Vale Shiraz to develop the complex secondary characteristics that James Halliday recognised with his 95-point rating. This maturation period has softened the tannins while intensifying the wine's mineral backbone and herbal nuances. The vintage also benefited from McLaren Vale's ideal growing conditions, where the ancient soils could fully express their terroir through the fruit.

McLaren Vale's deep ancient soils are geological treasures that date back millions of years, providing exceptional drainage and mineral complexity that Shiraz vines thrive in. These soils contribute to the wine's distinctive minerally character while allowing the roots to access diverse nutrients at various depths. The producer's obsession with soil science translates into wines that showcase true terroir expression, where you can literally taste the earth's influence in every sip.

Decant this wine 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the floral and herbal aromatics to fully bloom, and serve at 16-18°C to showcase its velvety texture. The wine's rich, full-bodied nature pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, aged cheeses, or hearty Mediterranean dishes that complement its earthy undertones. Given its 95-point pedigree and six years of development, this Shiraz deserves proper glassware to concentrate its complex bouquet.

A 95-point rating from James Halliday places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, representing less than 5% of all wines he reviews annually. Halliday's scoring system is particularly respected for Australian wines, and this rating indicates exceptional balance, complexity, and aging potential. The score reflects not just current drinking pleasure but also the wine's ability to continue evolving gracefully in the cellar for years to come.

While this 2018 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its developed floral and velvety characteristics, it has the structure and pedigree to cellar for another 8-12 years. The wine's mineral backbone and full-bodied nature suggest it will continue to evolve, developing more tertiary flavours like leather, tobacco, and spice. However, given its current peak drinking window and the pleasure it offers today, there's no need to wait unless you're specifically seeking those more mature characteristics.
