2018 was one of the great Barossa vintages, and this Marananga shiraz - held in the winery cellar and released with seven years of age behind it - is extraordinary proof of that. One of the Barossa's true cult producers. Tiny production, mailing list only, discussed in wine circles with genuine reverence. When a bottle appears outside those channels, you take your opportunity.

Why do we love this wine?

The nose is breathtaking - black fruits, cassis, blueberry, dark chocolate, aniseed, smoked meats and dried herbs woven together with remarkable complexity and balance. The palate is juicy and precise, with a line of acidity running the full length, silky tannins and a finish of extraordinary persistence that just keeps revealing more. Seven years of patient cellaring. Twenty more years of potential ahead. Cult Barossa shiraz from a legendary vintage. Rarely available outside the mailing list. Don't let this one get away.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2018 vintage is considered legendary in the Barossa, delivering exceptional concentration and balance that occurs perhaps once in a decade. Cool nights and warm days created perfect ripening conditions, allowing Shiraz to develop complex flavour compounds while retaining natural acidity. This vintage produced wines with both immediate appeal and extraordinary ageing potential, which is why it's earned 'Killer Vintage' recognition across the region.

Marananga sits in the heart of the Barossa Valley on ancient red clay soils that impart distinctive earthy, savoury characteristics to Shiraz. The village's slightly elevated position and proximity to the Barossa Ranges creates a unique microclimate that produces wines with remarkable textural complexity. These geological factors explain the wine's signature black olive and earthy notes, which are hallmarks of premium Marananga fruit.

Greenock Creek has earned cult status through their uncompromising approach to small-batch winemaking and their ability to consistently produce wines that score in the high 90s. As a Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery, they're recognised among Australia's elite producers, with most releases selling exclusively through their mailing list. Their Marananga Village Shiraz represents the pinnacle of their craft, combining traditional Barossa power with remarkable finesse.

While already showing beautifully after seven years of careful cellaring, this Shiraz has at least twenty more years of evolution ahead. The wine's silky tannin structure and natural acidity provide the backbone for extended ageing, during which the complex aromatics will continue to integrate and develop tertiary characteristics. Peak drinking will likely occur between 2028-2038, though it will remain exceptional well beyond that timeframe.

Decant this full-bodied Shiraz 1-2 hours before serving to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves. Serve at 16-18°C to showcase both the wine's power and elegance, pairing it with rich, savoury dishes like slow-cooked lamb or aged beef that complement its textured, earthy character. The wine's remarkable persistence means each sip will continue evolving in the glass, revealing new layers of dark chocolate, aniseed, and dried herbs.
