This is Reserve shiraz, only made in the best years and in tiny quantities. You’ll find layers of dark fruit - plum, blackberry and cherry compote - with spice, dark chocolate, earthy notes and a savoury edge that speaks to both the old vines and McLaren Vale itself. It’s full-bodied but not clumsy, plush but structured, with tannins that are firm yet polished. The finish is long and layered, the kind that makes you pause before you even think about the next sip and just take a moment to enjoy yourself.

Why do we love this wine?

Some of the fruit here comes off a McLaren Vale vineyard planted back in 1910 - gnarly old bush vines that have been tended by three generations of the same family. It’s a patch of dirt with deep clay soils, east-west rows to shield the fruit from the harsh summer sun, and roots that stretch forever thanks to access to good water. Translation? Vines that dig deep and deliver concentration, balance and serious power. This wine has helped put this producer firmly on the map - you'll know what we men as soon as you see the label. It’s approachable enough to drink young if you can’t wait, but built for the cellar if you’ve got patience. Either way, it’s a reserve-level shiraz with history in its bones and proof in the pudding.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz draws fruit from century-old bush vines planted in 1910, representing some of McLaren Vale's most precious viticultural heritage. These gnarly old vines have developed extensive root systems over 110+ years, allowing them to access deep water sources and mineral deposits that younger vines simply cannot reach. The result is fruit with exceptional concentration and complexity that reflects the true terroir of this historic site.

McLaren Vale's deep clay soils are crucial for producing premium Shiraz, as they retain moisture during hot summers while providing excellent drainage during winter rains. Clay soils also contribute to the wine's full-bodied structure and ability to develop complex flavours like black olive and blood plum over time. The east-west row orientation mentioned further protects the grapes from harsh afternoon sun, preserving natural acidity and preventing over-ripening.

This reserve-level Shiraz offers excellent drinking flexibility - it's approachable now for those who enjoy bold, fruit-forward wines, but has the structure and tannin backbone for extended cellaring. The 2018 vintage is hitting its stride at 6 years of age, with primary fruit flavours integrating beautifully with vanilla oak notes. Given the old vine fruit source and full-bodied style, it should continue developing complexity for another 8-12 years.

A 96-point rating from Wine Orbit places this Shiraz in truly exceptional territory, indicating outstanding quality across all parameters including aroma, flavour, structure and finish. Wine Orbit is known for their rigorous tasting standards, particularly with Australian wines, so this score reflects genuine excellence rather than grade inflation. Combined with the 'Museum Release' designation, this suggests a wine of collectible quality that represents the producer at their absolute best.

This flavour profile showcases classic McLaren Vale Shiraz at its finest - the blood plum provides rich, dark fruit intensity typical of warm climate Shiraz, while black olive adds savoury complexity that develops from old vine fruit and extended skin contact. The vanilla notes indicate quality oak integration, likely from French or American barrels, which adds structural support without overwhelming the fruit. Together, these elements create a wine that balances power with elegance, typical of premium Australian Shiraz.
