Utterly seamless. Raspberry, red plum and gentle spice roll over the palate, wrapped in silky tannins and a savoury edge that lingers. It’s big and structured yet nuanced, with texture and tannin in all the right places. This is McLaren Vale shiraz at its most expressive, and so full of life. An absolute cracker.

Why do we love this wine?

Grown on certified organic and biodynamic vines in the foothills of Willunga, this 2018 shiraz is a wine of purity, balance, and quiet confidence. A cooler, wetter season gave the vines exactly what they needed, producing fruit with beautiful natural acidity and depth of flavour. The winemaking was fairly hands-off and gentle - as it tends to be in ripper years like 2018 - open-top ferments, wild malolactic, and 12 months in seasoned French oak. No fining, no fluff, just honest winemaking from a great vintage. All together, a marvellously moreish McLaren Vale banger!

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2018 vintage in McLaren Vale was exceptional due to cooler, wetter conditions that allowed the vines to develop slowly and evenly. This weather pattern resulted in grapes with outstanding natural acidity and concentrated flavours, creating what winemakers call a 'ripper year'. The combination of ideal growing conditions and minimal intervention winemaking has produced a wine that perfectly captures the essence of this outstanding vintage.

Biodynamic viticulture goes beyond organic farming by treating the vineyard as a living ecosystem, following lunar cycles and using natural preparations to enhance soil health. This holistic approach in the Willunga foothills has created vines that produce fruit with exceptional purity and terroir expression. The result is a shiraz that truly reflects its place of origin, with the natural balance and depth that comes from healthy, self-sustaining vineyard practices.

When you have exceptional fruit from a great vintage like 2018, the best winemaking philosophy is often 'less is more'. The open-top fermentation allows for gentle extraction of colour and tannins, while wild malolactic fermentation adds complexity and textural richness. Twelve months in seasoned French oak provides structure without overwhelming the fruit's natural character, and the decision to avoid fining preserves the wine's authentic flavours and mouthfeel.

This rich, full-bodied shiraz with its blueberry and mulberry fruit characters and peppery spice is perfect for hearty dishes that can match its intensity. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The wine's natural acidity and balanced tannins also make it excellent with barbecued meats or rich pasta dishes with mushroom and herb sauces.

With its excellent structure from the outstanding 2018 vintage, organic viticulture, and careful winemaking, this shiraz has excellent ageing potential. The natural acidity and balanced tannins suggest it will continue to develop complexity for 8-12 years from vintage. The wine's current drinking window offers immediate pleasure, but those who cellar it will be rewarded with increased integration and the development of secondary flavours like leather, earth, and spice.
