This is Reserve shiraz, only made in the best years and in tiny quantities. You’ll find layers of dark fruit - plum, blackberry and cherry compote - with spice, dark chocolate, earthy notes and a savoury edge that speaks to both the old vines and McLaren Vale itself. It’s full-bodied but not clumsy, plush but structured, with tannins that are firm yet polished. The finish is long and layered, the kind that makes you pause before you even think about the next sip and just take a moment to enjoy yourself.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Some of the fruit here comes off a McLaren Vale vineyard planted back in 1910 - gnarly old bush vines that have been tended by three generations of the same family. It’s a patch of dirt with deep clay soils, east-west rows to shield the fruit from the harsh summer sun, and roots that stretch forever thanks to access to good water. Translation? Vines that dig deep and deliver concentration, balance and serious power. This wine has helped put this producer firmly on the map - you'll know what we men as soon as you see the label. It’s approachable enough to drink young if you can’t wait, but built for the cellar if you’ve got patience. Either way, it’s a reserve-level shiraz with history in its bones and proof in the pudding.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz draws fruit from century-old bush vines planted in 1910, creating extraordinary concentration and complexity that younger vineyards simply cannot match. The gnarly old vines have developed extensive root systems over 110+ years, allowing them to access deep water sources and mineral deposits that translate into remarkable depth and power in the glass. Combined with McLaren Vale's unique Mediterranean climate and clay soils, these ancient vines produce fruit with an intensity and character that's become the hallmark of this iconic producer.

With its 96-point rating and reserve-level structure, this 2018 Shiraz is built for extended cellaring and should continue developing for 15-20 years or more. The wine's full-bodied palate weight and fruit from century-old vines provides the tannin backbone and concentration needed for long-term ageing. While it's approachable now for those who can't wait, patient collectors will be rewarded as the wine's black olive, blood plum, and vanilla notes evolve into more complex tertiary flavours over the next decade.

The wine's rich, full-bodied profile and distinctive black olive, blood plum, and vanilla characteristics make it perfect for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye with herb butter, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The black olive notes particularly complement Mediterranean-inspired dishes with tapenade or herb crusts, while the blood plum richness pairs beautifully with game meats or dishes featuring dark fruit reductions.

Black Market Deals typically feature premium wines from renowned producers at exceptional prices, often because the producer prefers to remain anonymous to protect their regular retail relationships. Given the 96-point Wine Orbit rating, iconic producer status, and museum release designation, this appears to be a seriously premium McLaren Vale Shiraz being offered well below its usual market value. The century-old vineyard source and reserve-level quality suggest this would normally command significantly higher prices in traditional retail channels.

Museum Release indicates this wine has been carefully cellared by the producer for several years beyond its initial release, allowing it to develop additional complexity and integration. Rather than rushing to market, the winery has held back stock to release at optimal drinking maturity, which is particularly valuable for premium Shiraz that benefits from bottle age. This means you're getting a wine that's already begun its evolution, with the tannins softened and the black olive, blood plum, and vanilla flavours more harmoniously integrated than when first bottled.
