Polished but powerful. A celebration of red and dark fruits with mocha and liquorice nuances thrown in for good measure. Finessed and incredibly fine-grained savoury tannins - sounds like McLaren Vale to us! After a long nap in the cellar this one is dialled in and delivering on all the promise of its youth - WOW!

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Wonderfully textured, the wine is built around a long mineral acidity which carries intensity through the palate. Black pepper, cedar and elegant allspice notes linger throughout the lengthy, linear finish. Matured for 20+ months in new French and new American hogshead barrels - drink it now or dig a hole in your backyard and forget about it. Even with the age this one's already got, you could go another 10 years if you wanted to - we're willing to bet you won't be able to keep your hands off it for that long!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz stands out with its exceptional critical acclaim, earning 97 points from Wine Orbit and 95 points from both Halliday Wine Companion and Robert Parker Wine Advocate. The extended 20+ month maturation in both new French and American hogshead barrels creates a unique flavour profile that combines the elegance of French oak with the bold vanilla notes of American oak. McLaren Vale's warm Mediterranean climate and ancient soils contribute to the wine's distinctive mineral backbone and full-bodied structure.

This Shiraz is beautifully balanced between immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring potential. Already six years old, it's drinking magnificently now with its flavours well-integrated, but the wine's mineral acidity and full-bodied structure suggest it can easily develop for another decade. The combination of quality fruit, extended oak maturation, and McLaren Vale's renowned aging potential means you could cellar it until 2035 or beyond, though the wine's current accessibility makes it tempting to enjoy sooner.

The wine's meaty, chocolate, and black olive characteristics make it perfect for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye steaks, or rich game meats like venison, where the wine's black pepper and cedar notes complement the protein's natural flavours. The mineral acidity cuts through rich, fatty dishes, while the elegant allspice notes pair beautifully with Mediterranean cuisine featuring olives, herbs, and aged cheeses.

The 'Black Market Deal' designation typically indicates this is a premium wine offered at a significantly reduced price, often because the producer prefers to remain anonymous or move stock quickly. Given the exceptional ratings (95-97 points) and the wine's obvious quality markers like extended oak aging and McLaren Vale provenance, this represents outstanding value. These deals allow wine lovers to access high-end wines that would normally command much higher prices in the retail market.

The 20+ month maturation in both new French and American hogsheads reveals a winemaker committed to creating complexity and depth. French oak contributes subtle tannins and elegant spice notes, while American oak adds the cedar characteristics mentioned in the tasting notes. This dual-oak approach is sophisticated and expensive, typically reserved for premium wines, and explains the wine's wonderful texture and lengthy finish that critics have praised so highly.
