Why do we love this wine?

This is one to really sit and savour. A blend fruit from three immaculate vineyards in Ebenezer, Seppeltsfield, and Greenock sees 20 months in French and American oak barrels, bolstering this wine to unbelievable heights. It's a mammoth of a drop, laced with dutch licorice, a variety of baking spices and fresh rolling tobacco, and of course that deeply layered black fruit pallet. This has wow-factor in so many ways, it'll leave you speechless.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz earned its place in James Suckling's Top 100 Wines 2020 through meticulous vineyard selection and extended oak maturation. The fruit sourced from three premium Barossa sub-regions - Ebenezer, Seppeltsfield, and Greenock - each contributes distinct characteristics that create remarkable complexity. The 20-month aging in both French and American oak barrels adds layers of spice and structure while preserving the intense black fruit core that Barossa Shiraz is renowned for.

The Barossa Valley's warm continental climate and ancient soils produce Shiraz with exceptional concentration and power. This wine showcases the region's ability to create full-bodied wines with intense black fruit flavours like blood plum and black cherry, while the valley's diverse microclimates across Ebenezer, Seppeltsfield, and Greenock add complexity. The distinctive dutch liquorice and tobacco notes are classic Barossa signatures, developed through the interaction of old vine fruit and the region's unique terroir.

This powerful Shiraz demands equally robust dishes that can match its intensity and tannin structure. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks with rosemary, grilled ribeye steaks, or rich game meats like venison, where the wine's spice notes will complement the meat's natural flavours. The clove and baking spice characteristics also make it excellent with barbecued meats or dishes featuring pepper and herb crusts, while the wine's full body can stand up to strong aged cheeses.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, its exceptional structure and 98-point pedigree suggest it will continue developing for 10-15 years. The combination of premium fruit, extended oak aging, and full-bodied style creates a wine built for the long haul. The tannins will gradually soften while the complex spice and fruit layers integrate further, though many collectors find that top-tier Barossa Shiraz like this shows magnificently at both 5-7 years and again at 12-15 years of age.

Black Market Deals typically represent exceptional value wines from premium producers who prefer to remain anonymous, often due to existing distribution agreements or brand positioning strategies. This allows wine lovers to access seriously high-quality drops at prices well below their usual retail value. Given the multiple 95+ point ratings and James Suckling Top 100 recognition, this Shiraz would normally command a much higher price point, making it an outstanding opportunity for both immediate enjoyment and cellar investment.
