Barossa's most known sub-region of Eden Valley still doesn't get the recognition it deserves for some of the areas best wines. Yes, we stand by it, and we're sure there would be a lot of professionals who stand with us.

Why do we love this wine?

Why do we love Eden Valley shiraz so much? It's all about altitude. No, not attitude- altitude. That magical thing that completely re-defines the growing experience of a vine, and the consequent fruit that trickles all the way down into the bottle. You'll get much more mulberry, savoury spice, meatiness, and black olive tapenade notes to compliment that signature plum-and-berry shiraz style that we know and adore. The Eden Valley might be only a few hundred metres higher, but it may as well be in the heavens for creating wines like this.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eden Valley's higher altitude creates a cooler climate that fundamentally changes how shiraz develops, producing more complex savoury characteristics alongside the classic fruit profile. The elevation allows for slower ripening and better retention of natural acidity, resulting in wines with greater structure and longevity. This altitude effect transforms the typical jammy shiraz into something more elegant with distinctive mulberry, black olive tapenade, and meaty notes that reflect the region's unique terroir.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to allow its complex flavours to fully express themselves without being overwhelmed by warmth. Decant for at least 30 minutes before serving to help integrate the tannins and release the wine's aromatic complexity. The full-bodied nature and meaty characteristics make it perfect alongside grilled red meats, game, or rich stews where the wine's structure can complement rather than compete with bold flavours.

Violet aromas in shiraz are a hallmark of premium fruit and careful winemaking, indicating the grapes achieved optimal ripeness while retaining elegance. These floral notes typically emerge from cooler climate sites like Eden Valley, where the extended growing season allows for the development of complex aromatics beyond simple fruit flavours. The presence of violets alongside meaty and plum characteristics suggests this wine has the balance and complexity to age gracefully, developing even more nuanced aromatics over time.

The 95-point rating from Wine Showcase and Gold Medal recognition reflect this wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse, which is challenging to achieve in full-bodied shiraz. Critics particularly value Eden Valley shiraz for its ability to combine intensity with elegance, and this wine demonstrates the region's signature style of savoury complexity layered over rich fruit. The boutique producer designation also suggests small-batch attention to detail and quality-focused winemaking that often results in wines that punch above their weight class.

Premium Eden Valley shiraz from 2018 has excellent cellaring potential, typically developing beautifully for 10-15 years from vintage. The wine's full-bodied structure, natural acidity from the cooler altitude, and complex flavour profile suggest it will evolve from its current fruit-forward state into more tertiary characteristics like leather, earth, and spice. Store it in a cool, dark place and expect the wine to hit its peak drinking window around 2025-2030, though it may continue to develop gracefully beyond that point.
