Why do we love this wine?

It would be quite appropriate to say that this producer is an icon of the Barossa Valley. You’ll know them and revere them for sure. And this is their flagship shiraz, one that regularly delights the critics and finds its way into the most discerning cellars. Some of the fruit used comes from vines planted over 150 years ago and the wine spends over a year in 25% new French oak. It’s pure silk on the palate, endlessly elegant and surprisingly light on its feet despite the depth of flavour. Plum, cinnamon, dark chocolate, pepper and cedar intertwine, making for some heady drinking. We’re loving how it’s going now, but can’t wait to see it after a decade and then two decades. Do you have the patience?

Frequently Asked Questions

This St Hallett Old Block Shiraz 2018 has achieved exceptional recognition with 97 points from Wine Advocate and 95 points from both Halliday Wine Companion and Decanter. The combination of old vine fruit from the prestigious Barossa Valley and St Hallett's winemaking expertise creates a wine of remarkable concentration and complexity. Old vines typically produce lower yields but more intensely flavoured grapes, contributing to the wine's full-bodied character and rich flavour profile.

The dark chocolate and mocha notes in this Shiraz are characteristic of premium Barossa Valley expressions, developing through a combination of terroir and winemaking techniques. These flavours often emerge from extended skin contact during fermentation and careful oak integration, where the wine's natural dark fruit concentration melds with subtle roasted characteristics. The warm Barossa climate allows Shiraz grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness, creating the foundation for these complex secondary flavours alongside the primary plum notes.

The 'Old Block' designation indicates this Shiraz is crafted from mature vineyard blocks, likely planted decades ago when vine density and farming practices were different. Old vines develop extensive root systems that access deeper soil layers and water sources, creating more concentrated and complex fruit. St Hallett's Old Block wines are renowned for showcasing the intensity and character that only comes from these heritage plantings, contributing to the wine's full-bodied palate weight and exceptional critic scores.

Serve this St Hallett Shiraz at 16-18°C to allow its rich, full-bodied character to shine while maintaining freshness. Decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving will help integrate the wine's components and allow the dark chocolate and mocha notes to emerge more prominently. The wine's structure and intensity make it perfect for pairing with robust dishes like grilled red meats, aged cheeses, or rich stews that can match its palate weight.

While this 2018 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, showcasing its plum, chocolate and mocha characteristics, it has the structure and quality to cellar for another 8-12 years. The exceptional ratings across multiple critics suggest a wine with excellent aging potential, where the full-bodied tannins will continue to integrate and develop additional complexity. Barossa Shiraz from quality producers like St Hallett typically reaches peak drinking windows between 5-15 years from vintage, making this an excellent choice for both immediate enjoyment and medium-term cellaring.
