Why do we love this wine?

A tribute to the man who started the family's winemaking journey, this single vineyard Barossa Shiraz carries that weight with extraordinary grace. Hand-sorted fruit from one carefully chosen block, open fermented, then 18 months in a combination of French, American and Hungarian oak - followed by another two years of bottle maturation under optimal conditions before it was deemed ready to face the world. That kind of patience shows up in every sip. In the glass it's inky and dramatic - blackberry, liquorice and dark cherry leading the charge, with black olive, cedar, scorched earth and cracked pepper lurking underneath. The palate is full-bodied, plush and genuinely voluminous, with velvet tannins that somehow manage to be both structured and completely seamless. The finish is long, opulent and deeply satisfying. This is Barossa Shiraz made with intent, history and know-how. You can taste all three.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a single vineyard expression from one carefully selected block, representing the pinnacle of Schild Estate's winemaking. The hand-sorting, open fermentation, and extended 18-month oak maturation in French, American and Hungarian barrels creates extraordinary complexity. Most importantly, it received an additional two years of bottle maturation before release - a level of patience that transforms good Shiraz into exceptional wine, allowing all elements to integrate seamlessly.

Given the wine's structured yet seamless tannins and the extensive maturation it's already received, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 15-20 years from vintage. The combination of premium single vineyard fruit, quality oak integration, and bottle conditioning means it's drinking beautifully now but will continue developing complexity. Barossa Shiraz of this calibre typically hits its stride around 8-10 years and can maintain excellence for decades when properly stored.

The wine's voluminous palate and earthy, spiced character makes it perfect for rich, slow-cooked dishes like braised lamb shanks, beef bourguignon, or char-grilled ribeye. The black olive and cedar notes complement Mediterranean flavours beautifully, while the liquorice and dark berry intensity can stand up to bold cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese. Game meats like venison or duck also create magical pairings with this style of premium Barossa Shiraz.

The consistent high ratings (95-97 points across multiple critics) reflect the wine's exceptional balance between power and elegance. Critics recognise the sophisticated oak integration from three different wood types, the purity of single vineyard expression, and the seamless tannin structure that's both full-bodied and refined. The extended bottle maturation before release demonstrates serious winemaking commitment, resulting in a wine that showcases Barossa terroir at its finest while honouring the Ben Schild legacy.

Ben Schild was the patriarch who established the family's winemaking tradition, making this wine a tribute to generational expertise and heritage. Single vineyard reserves bearing a founder's name typically represent a winery's absolute best fruit and most careful winemaking - this isn't just marketing, but a genuine expression of family legacy. The meticulous attention to detail, from hand-sorting to extended maturation, reflects the standards Ben Schild would have demanded, ensuring his name appears only on wines worthy of the family reputation.
