A big-time McLaren Vale bruiser that still knows how to turn on the charm. We can't tell you the name of the producer... but trust us, you'll know it. Ripe plum and black cherry meet dark chocolate, espresso and that hint of spice. Supple tannins, serious length, and the kind of depth that only comes with time in bottle.

Why do we love this wine?

We had to pull a few strings to get our hands on this one - trust us, wine of this quality very rarely makes it the cellar door. It's some of the very best shiraz from McLaren Vale royalty, gorgeously matured, just hitting its stride. Carefully selected fruit from low-yielding vineyard sites across the district, blended, bottled and aged with serious intent. Plum, black cherry and liquorice take the lead, backed by dark chocolate, notes of espresso, and fine oak spice. There’s a savoury edge too - black pepper, cedar, clove maybe? - giving shape to the lush, concentrated fruit. Tannins are silky and seamless, acidity right on point, and the finish is long, rich, and complex. This is properly grown-up stuff. There's plenty of years ahead of this stunning drop, but drinking beautifully already. For this price? Silly not to.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine represents the pinnacle of McLaren Vale shiraz craftsmanship, sourced from premium low-yielding vineyard sites that rarely release their fruit to the general market. The careful district-wide blending and extended maturation process has created a wine that showcases the region's renowned ability to produce powerful yet elegant shiraz. With its 95-point rating from Ray Jordan and 'Museum Release' status, this represents the kind of wine that McLaren Vale producers typically reserve for their most exclusive allocations.

This full-bodied shiraz is currently in its prime drinking window but has excellent cellaring potential for many years ahead. The 2017 vintage has had sufficient time to integrate its tannins and develop complex secondary flavours, while the wine's structure and acidity suggest it will continue to evolve gracefully. McLaren Vale shiraz of this calibre typically peaks between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning you can enjoy it now for its vibrant fruit expression or cellar it for further development of tertiary characters like leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity.

The wine's combination of dark fruit, chocolate, and savoury spice elements makes it incredibly versatile with hearty dishes. Classic pairings include grilled red meats, slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses that complement the wine's liquorice and black pepper notes. The silky tannins and espresso undertones also work beautifully with game meats or rich mushroom dishes, while the wine's full body can stand up to bold flavours like barbecued ribs or spicy Middle Eastern cuisine.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, ancient soils, and proximity to the ocean create ideal conditions for producing world-class shiraz with both power and finesse. The region's winemaking heritage dates back to the 1830s, and its unique terroir consistently produces shiraz with distinctive chocolate and liquorice characters - exactly what you'll find in this wine. The district's reputation for premium shiraz has been built on wines that combine the richness of warm climate fruit with the elegance that comes from cool sea breezes and diverse soil types across different vineyard sites.

The 'Black Market Deal' label indicates this is an exceptional wine that's being offered at a significantly reduced price from its usual market value, often due to special arrangements with prestigious producers. These deals typically feature wines from iconic producers who prefer to remain anonymous while offering their premium stock at accessible prices. Given the 95-point rating and 'Iconic Producer' status, this represents serious value for a museum-quality McLaren Vale shiraz that would normally command much higher prices through traditional retail channels.
