Tried, tasted, guzzled and enjoyed. Blewitt Springs has been consistently popping out some of the best shiraz in McLaren Vale for years and this is no exception. Bold and bright but softened with age. The price on this one feels like a glitch, delicious wine.

Why do we love this wine?

The Blewitt Springs area of McLaren Vale has a pretty good argument for becoming a fully fledged sub-region. Known for exceptional natural acidity and enduring, plush fruit, the sandy soils really lend themselves to a modern expression of McLaren Vale shiraz with an old school twist. Dark fruit, wonderful acid and that classic chocolatey note that you'd expect from a wine that's spent 18 months in French oak barrels. What more could you want from Australia's favourite variety - shiraz all over.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blewitt Springs' sandy soils create a unique terroir that produces shiraz with exceptional natural acidity and enduring fruit character. This combination of soil type and climate allows for what's described as a 'modern expression with an old school twist' - meaning you get contemporary winemaking techniques applied to traditional McLaren Vale fruit characteristics. The sandy terroir is so distinctive that there's growing recognition for Blewitt Springs to become its own official sub-region within McLaren Vale.

The extended French oak maturation adds that signature chocolatey note while allowing the wine's natural dark fruit characteristics to integrate and develop complexity. French oak is prized for its tight grain and subtle tannin contribution, which complements rather than overwhelms the plush fruit from the sandy Blewitt Springs soils. This lengthy barrel aging also helps preserve the wine's exceptional natural acidity while building the full-bodied structure that makes this shiraz age-worthy.

Museum release indicates this 2017 shiraz has been carefully cellared by the winery for several years beyond its initial vintage, allowing it to develop tertiary flavours and complexity that younger wines lack. The winery has essentially done the aging work for you, releasing it when they believe it's drinking at its optimal point. This practice is particularly valuable with full-bodied shiraz, as the extra bottle age allows the tannins to soften and the fruit, oak, and acid components to achieve perfect harmony.

The wine's rich, chocolatey notes and blackberry fruit make it ideal for hearty red meat dishes like grilled lamb with rosemary or beef short ribs. The natural acidity from Blewitt Springs' terroir means it can handle rich, fatty foods without becoming cloying, while the black olive characteristics pair beautifully with Mediterranean flavours. The full-bodied structure and French oak integration also make it excellent with aged hard cheeses or dark chocolate desserts.

Given its museum release status and the quality indicators like single vineyard sourcing and cult producer credentials, this shiraz likely has another 8-12 years of cellaring potential from now. The combination of natural acidity from the sandy Blewitt Springs soils and 18 months French oak maturation provides the structural backbone needed for long-term aging. However, as it's already been aged by the winery to drinking maturity, it's also perfect to enjoy immediately if you prefer more primary fruit characteristics.
