Why do we love this wine?

Deep, dark ripe fruit dazzles to begin, but then the nuance of age makes itself known, adding another element to this fantastic wine. A swarm of brambly, developed fruit is framed by punchy tannin and well integrated acidity. Seven years cellar time has allowed some fruit leather and umami to enter the flavour profile, but they're only there as a suggestion of what this wine might do over the next decade - right now its all about the fruit - luscious and complex and packing a genuine, no-holds-barred bit of punch. Chocolate, tobacco, pepper, spice – everything nice. Personally I'm torn: I would love to see what this wine looks like in the back half of the 2030s, but I know I'll drink my modest allocation by the end of the month.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz has reached a beautiful drinking window after seven years of cellaring, where the primary fruit flavours have developed complexity without losing their vibrancy. The wine shows early signs of tertiary development with hints of fruit leather and umami, but the luscious fruit character still dominates. While it could cellar well into the 2030s, it's currently expressing the perfect balance between youthful power and mature sophistication that makes it irresistible to drink now.

Barossa Shiraz is renowned for producing some of Australia's most powerful and age-worthy expressions of the variety, thanks to the region's warm climate and ancient soils. The combination of old vine material and traditional winemaking techniques creates wines with exceptional concentration and structure. This 2017 exemplifies the Barossa style with its full-bodied palate weight, punchy tannins, and complex spice profile featuring chocolate, tobacco, and pepper notes that are hallmarks of the region.

Receiving 95 points from both Ray Jordan and Wine Showcase indicates exceptional quality and consistency in professional assessment. These high scores reflect the wine's outstanding balance of power and finesse, complex flavour development, and excellent aging potential. The 4.2 Vivino rating across all vintages suggests this producer consistently delivers quality, while the professional scores specifically highlight this vintage's superior expression of Barossa Shiraz characteristics.

The wine's full-bodied structure and complex spice profile make it ideal for rich, flavourful dishes that can match its intensity. The chocolate and tobacco notes pair beautifully with grilled red meats, especially beef with pepper crusts or barbecued lamb with rosemary. The allspice and blood plum characteristics also complement game meats, aged cheeses, and dishes with earthy mushroom or truffle elements that echo the wine's developing umami complexity.

This wine sits at a fascinating crossroads where it's drinking beautifully now but has significant potential for further development. The well-integrated tannins and acidity provide the structural backbone for aging well into the 2030s, where it will likely develop more pronounced tertiary flavours. However, the current fruit-forward expression with emerging complexity makes it equally rewarding to drink immediately, creating the classic wine lover's dilemma of patience versus instant gratification.
