Why do we love this wine?

We’re up in the stratosphere now, amongst the upper echelon of Barossa shiraz. Hand-picked from a single block, basket pressed and set to barrel for 20 months. Deep and inky, yet expressing vivid dark berry fruits along with chocolate and licorice, and held together well by cedary and structural notes from the time in French oak. This is serious stuff, jumping boldly out of the glass at present, but built to age for decades. When you enjoy it is up to you.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This single-block Shiraz represents the pinnacle of Barossa winemaking, with meticulous hand-picking and basket pressing preserving the fruit's integrity. The 20-month French oak maturation has created a wine of remarkable complexity, balancing vivid dark berry fruits with chocolate and liquorice notes. The cedary oak structure provides the backbone for decades of cellaring potential, while the wine's immediate boldness shows it's drinking beautifully now.

Built for the long haul, this Shiraz has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for decades. The full-bodied palate weight and French oak tannins provide excellent preservation qualities typical of premium Barossa Shiraz. While it's showing brilliantly now with its bold fruit expression, patient collectors will be rewarded as the wine develops greater complexity and tertiary flavours over 15-20 years or more.

The wine's rich blackberry and dark chocolate flavours make it perfect for robust red meat dishes like slow-cooked lamb shanks or grilled ribeye steak. The liquorice and plum notes complement game meats beautifully, while the French oak's cedary influence pairs wonderfully with barbecued meats. For cheese lovers, try it with aged cheddar or blue cheese to match the wine's intensity and complexity.

Black Market deals allow prestigious wineries to offer their premium wines at exceptional value without affecting their regular retail pricing structure. This arrangement benefits both the winery, which can move stock without devaluing their brand, and wine lovers who access genuine, high-quality wines at significantly reduced prices. The mystery adds excitement, but the quality credentials like the 97-point rating and Five Star Halliday winery status speak for themselves.

Barossa Valley's warm climate and ancient soils create Shiraz with distinctive power and concentration, evident in this wine's deep, inky colour and bold fruit expression. The region's old vine heritage and traditional winemaking methods, like the basket pressing used here, produce wines with exceptional depth and longevity. Barossa Shiraz typically shows richer chocolate and spice notes compared to cooler climate styles, making it Australia's most internationally recognised wine style.
