Why do we love this wine?

It's hard to justify even writing this tasting note, as it'll all be sold out by them time anyone gets a chance to read it. In any case, the wine: blueberries and plums over vanilla, eucalypt, and sweet spice. Liquorice and fruit compote follow neatly, deftly behind the initial fruit burst. Among many things, this wine is further proof of the superiority of the Stelvin closure as opposed to cork for ageing cool climate reds. This is wine made with the cellar in mind. It is just now hitting its stride, and what a stride it is. The fruit is remarkably fresh, but no aged characteristics like leather, wet earth and game have been sacrificed whatsoever. The density of the fruit is framed by maturity without being swamped by it, and the wine is able to hold its form through a lasting finish. This is truly a deal to jump at, and one you won't see again.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine demonstrates the ideal maturation curve for premium Shiraz, where it's just hitting its stride after nearly a decade of cellaring. The fruit remains remarkably fresh while developing complex secondary characteristics like leather, wet earth and game notes. The Stelvin closure has preserved the wine's integrity perfectly, allowing the dense fruit to be framed by maturity without being overwhelmed, creating a harmonious balance that's rare to achieve.

The Pyrenees region in Victoria is renowned for producing cool climate Shiraz with exceptional ageing potential and distinctive character. The cooler temperatures allow for slower ripening, which preserves natural acidity and creates wines with both power and elegance. This particular example showcases how Pyrenees Shiraz can develop complex eucalyptus and spice notes while maintaining vibrant fruit expression, a hallmark of the region's unique terroir.

The Stelvin (screw cap) closure has proven superior for ageing cool climate reds like this Shiraz, eliminating cork taint risk and providing consistent oxygen transmission rates. This allows the wine to develop gracefully over time while preserving the primary fruit characteristics that make it so appealing. The result is a wine that shows both youthful vibrancy and mature complexity after nine years, something that can be inconsistent with traditional cork closures.

The rich, full-bodied nature and complex flavour profile of blueberries, plums, vanilla and sweet spice make this Shiraz ideal for hearty dishes. Consider pairing with slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, grilled ribeye steak, or aged hard cheeses. The wine's liquorice and fruit compote notes also work beautifully with game meats like venison or duck, while the eucalyptus characteristics complement dishes with Mediterranean herbs.

A 96-point rating from James Halliday represents exceptional quality in the Australian wine context, placing this Shiraz in the top tier of Australian wines. Halliday's scoring system is particularly respected for Australian varietals, and this score indicates outstanding balance, complexity and ageing potential. Combined with the Special Value Award, it suggests this wine delivers premium quality at an accessible price point, making it both an excellent drinking wine and potential cellar investment.
