"This is why red wine is cellared" - Campbell Mattinson. Let's not beat around the bush, this is a big shiraz, even by McLaren Vale's standards. Eleven years of careful cellaring has brought a smoothness and silkiness to this wine, whilst not stifling the natural grunt and gutsiness of this gorgeous drop. Aged shiraz, done very, very, very well.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Eleven years on and absolutely strutting its stuff. As Mattinson noted, this is exactly why we cellar red wine. It’s all come together beautifully - rich notes of coffee, blackberry, leather and earthiness meet sweet spice, hints of liquorice, and a long list of other subtleties. The palate’s smooth, layered and complete, framed by fine, resolved tannins that still hold the structure beautifully. All the promise it showed in its youth? Fully delivered. This is a mature stunner, right in the sweet spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

After eleven years of careful cellaring, this Shiraz has reached its optimal drinking window where all elements have harmoniously integrated. The tannins have softened and resolved while maintaining structural integrity, allowing the complex flavours of coffee, blackberry, and leather to shine through without the harsh edges of youth. This demonstrates the classic aging curve of premium Australian Shiraz, where patience rewards drinkers with a wine that's exponentially more complex than its younger self.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for full-bodied Shiraz with the rich, concentrated flavours evident in this wine. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent help retain acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness, resulting in wines with both power and elegance. This terroir particularly excels at producing Shiraz with the earthy, spicy characteristics and aging potential demonstrated by this exceptional 2014 vintage.

These secondary and tertiary flavours emerge through the complex chemical reactions that occur during extended bottle aging. The chocolate notes develop from the interaction between tannins and fruit compounds, while tobacco characteristics arise from the breakdown of phenolic compounds and the influence of oak integration over time. These savoury elements complement the primary fruit flavours, creating the layered complexity that distinguishes a well-aged Shiraz from younger expressions.

The consistent high scores from respected critics like Wine Orbit (95pts) and James Halliday (94pts) indicate exceptional quality across multiple evaluation criteria including structure, complexity, and aging potential. The 'Museum Release' designation suggests this wine represents a benchmark example of its vintage and region. These ratings, combined with the strong Vivino consumer score, demonstrate both critical acclaim and broad appeal among wine enthusiasts.

Decant this wine 1-2 hours before serving to allow the complex aromatics to fully express themselves and any sediment to settle. Serve at 16-18°C to showcase the intricate balance between fruit concentration and savoury complexity. The wine's full-bodied nature and resolved tannins make it perfect for rich dishes like slow-cooked lamb, aged beef, or strong cheeses that can match its intensity without overwhelming the delicate nuances that have developed over eleven years.
