Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

First and foremost: fruit. It's the hallmark of well aged wine, how well the fruit presents itself aromatically. Here it sings - fully and completely. A summer berry mix with blueberry and plum leading the way - classic McLaren Vale in every way. Lifted and punchy acidity gives the wine youthful zeal and a lot of promise for the future still. There's a little bit of a savoury green, grassy note that provides an all important to the freshness of the fruit profile. Powerful to be sure – it has a rich, dense core. Some medicinal eucalypt chimes in late in the piece, rounding out the sweet aromatics with some sophistication. This is a really special wine and a study in what aged wine can and should look like. If ever I needed to convert someone to the nuance, intricacy, and sheer other-worldly enjoyment of aged reds, this is what I would reach for.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This McLaren Vale Shiraz demonstrates the transformative power of proper cellaring, where the fruit has evolved from primary berry flavours into a complex symphony of summer berries, blueberry, and plum. The decade of ageing has allowed tannins to soften while preserving the wine's structural integrity, creating layers of medicinal eucalyptus and savoury green notes that only emerge with time. It's a textbook example of how premium Australian Shiraz develops tertiary characteristics while maintaining its regional typicity.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient soils create the perfect conditions for Shiraz to develop intense fruit concentration while retaining natural acidity. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, allowing for extended ripening periods that build complexity without losing freshness. This wine showcases the classic McLaren Vale profile - rich, dense fruit with underlying earthiness and that distinctive eucalyptus note that comes from the region's native vegetation.

The wine's rich, dense core and medicinal eucalyptus notes make it ideal for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats. The lifted acidity and berry fruit profile also complement Mediterranean cuisine, particularly dishes with herbs and olive oil. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese, where the wine's complexity can stand up to strong flavours while the fruit sweetness balances the saltiness.

While this 2013 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its evolved aromatics and integrated tannins, it still shows 'youthful zeal' and 'promise for the future'. Premium McLaren Vale Shiraz can age gracefully for 15-20 years, and this wine's lifted acidity and structural backbone suggest it will continue developing complexity. You can enjoy it immediately for its current harmony, or cellar it for another 5-8 years to see how the savoury elements further integrate with the fruit.

The 90-point Robert Parker Wine Advocate score places this wine in the 'Outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that stands above typical commercial releases. Being from a Five Red Star Halliday rated winery and designated as 'Iconic Producer' confirms this comes from one of Australia's most respected wineries with a proven track record. The 'Single Vineyard' designation means the grapes come from one specific site, allowing for greater expression of terroir and typically indicating premium fruit selection.
