Why do we love this wine?

First and foremost: fruit. It's the hallmark of well aged wine, how well the fruit presents itself aromatically. Here it sings - fully and completely. A summer berry mix with blueberry and plum leading the way - classic McLaren Vale in every way. Lifted and punchy acidity gives the wine youthful zeal and a lot of promise for the future still. There's a little bit of a savoury green, grassy note that provides an all important to the freshness of the fruit profile. Powerful to be sure – it has a rich, dense core. Some medicinal eucalypt chimes in late in the piece, rounding out the sweet aromatics with some sophistication. This is a really special wine and a study in what aged wine can and should look like. If ever I needed to convert someone to the nuance, intricacy, and sheer other-worldly enjoyment of aged reds, this is what I would reach for.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine exemplifies how premium Shiraz develops complexity through proper cellaring. The decade-plus ageing has allowed the initial bold fruit flavours to integrate beautifully with secondary characteristics like eucalyptus and savoury notes. The fruit remains vibrant and expressive rather than fading, which is the hallmark of quality wine with excellent ageing potential. This demonstrates why McLaren Vale Shiraz is considered among Australia's finest expressions of the varietal.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Shiraz to develop the classic Australian profile showcased in this wine. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes help retain natural acidity while allowing full flavour development. This terroir produces the signature summer berry and plum characteristics evident in this bottle, along with the lifted acidity that gives the wine its youthful energy despite its age.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to help the wine open up and showcase its layered fruit and savoury characteristics. The wine's power and density make it perfect for rich dishes like grilled red meats, game, or aged cheeses that can match its intensity without overwhelming the nuanced flavours.

The wine's earthy undertones and eucalyptus characteristics pair beautifully with herb-crusted lamb, venison, or beef dishes featuring rosemary and thyme. The menthol notes create excellent synergy with dishes containing native Australian herbs or Mediterranean seasonings. Rich, umami-forward foods like mushroom risotto or aged hard cheeses also complement the wine's savoury complexity while allowing the fruit flavours to shine through.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now with its perfect balance of fruit vibrancy and aged complexity, it still has excellent cellaring potential. The lifted acidity and dense core structure suggest it can continue developing for several more years. However, given its current peak drinking window and the way the fruit is singing, there's no need to wait - it's a perfect example of how great aged wine should taste right now.
