Over a decade old, and still representing youth and vigour. Blackcurrants and tobacco leaf, maraschino cherry and violets: you almost wouldn't believe this wine's age.

Why do we love this wine?

2012 will no doubt go down in the Barossa history books as one of the best vintages in the last two decades. Rivalling 1998 and 2002, it was one of those 'hard to make bad wine' vintages. You can expect most shiraz in this vintage to be concentrated and aromatically intense, and this delivers on that promise. This is a joy to drink, we just wish we had more of it around.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2012 vintage is considered one of the finest Barossa vintages in two decades, rivalling legendary years like 1998 and 2002. It was described as a 'hard to make bad wine' vintage, meaning the growing conditions were so ideal that even average producers created exceptional wines. The combination of perfect weather patterns, optimal ripening conditions, and ideal harvest timing resulted in wines with extraordinary concentration and aromatic intensity that will age beautifully for decades.

These complex flavour notes emerge from both the grape's natural characteristics and winemaking techniques typical of premium Barossa Shiraz. The chocolate notes come from the wine's natural tannin structure and fruit concentration, while spice elements reflect the Barossa's warm climate and old vine intensity. Vanilla flavours typically develop from oak barrel ageing, where the wine absorbs compounds from the wood, creating a harmonious integration that becomes more pronounced with proper cellaring.

Single vineyard wines represent the purest expression of a specific site's terroir - the unique combination of soil, climate, and topography that influences grape character. Rather than blending fruit from multiple locations, this approach allows the winemaker to showcase the distinct personality of one exceptional vineyard block. This often results in more complex, nuanced wines with greater aging potential, as the grapes benefit from uniform growing conditions and careful site-specific viticulture practices.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) in large bowled glasses to allow the concentrated aromas to develop fully. The rich, full-bodied style pairs beautifully with robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or aged hard cheeses that can match the wine's intensity. Consider decanting 30-60 minutes before serving to soften the tannins and allow the chocolate and spice notes to integrate, especially given this wine's boutique producer pedigree and cellar-worthy structure.

Cult producers are typically small-scale winemakers who have developed devoted followings due to their exceptional quality and limited production volumes. These producers often employ traditional techniques, source fruit from premium vineyard sites, and maintain meticulous attention to detail throughout the winemaking process. Their wines frequently become highly sought-after collector's items, with strong secondary market values, making this Black Market Deal particularly valuable for wine enthusiasts seeking restaurant-quality wines at accessible prices.
