Why do we love this wine?

'McLaren Vale shiraz', pretty much all you need to say to get us salivating, add in 'single-vineyard museum release', and we're chomping at the metaphorical bit. From one of the industry's most well-known and instantly recognisable producers, this beautiful drop is equally at home now with a hearty meal, or in the cellar for the next 10 years. Each single-vineyard has distinct feel and flavour, this is no different. Ripe dark fruits, vanilla and cocoa, a touch of mint and silky-but-robust tannins holding the whole thing together. This is Vale shiraz at its peak.

Frequently Asked Questions

Museum releases are wines that have been carefully cellared by the producer for extended periods, allowing them to develop complex tertiary flavours and mature tannin structure. This 2011 McLaren Vale Shiraz has been aged for over a decade, developing the silky tannins and integrated flavours that only come with proper bottle maturation. The producer has held back this single-vineyard wine to release it at its optimal drinking window, showcasing how premium Australian Shiraz evolves beautifully with time.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for producing rich, full-bodied Shiraz with distinctive regional character. The warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby coast help retain natural acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness. This terroir contributes to the wine's ripe dark fruit profile and the touch of mint that's characteristic of quality McLaren Vale Shiraz, while the region's ancient soils add the earthy complexity and robust tannin structure.

This rich, full-bodied Shiraz with its dark fruit, vanilla, and cocoa notes pairs beautifully with robust, flavourful dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye steak, or hearty beef stews where the wine's silky tannins complement the meat's richness. The earthy and liquorice notes also make it excellent with game meats, aged hard cheeses, or even dark chocolate desserts for a sophisticated finish.

Premium McLaren Vale Shiraz from iconic producers typically has excellent cellaring potential, and this single-vineyard example is no exception. While it's drinking beautifully now after over a decade of maturation, the robust tannin structure and balanced acidity suggest it can continue developing for another 10 years or more. The wine will gradually evolve, with the primary fruit flavours integrating further with the oak-derived vanilla and developing more complex tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and spice.

A 95-point rating from The Barefoot Review Online places this Shiraz in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality and complexity. This score reflects the wine's perfect balance of ripe fruit, well-integrated oak, and structured tannins that define premium Australian Shiraz. Combined with its single-vineyard pedigree and museum release status, this rating confirms the wine represents excellent value for a mature, cellar-worthy Shiraz from one of Australia's most respected wine regions.
