Why do we love this wine?

Deeply complex, layered, and heady. This is something truly special. We tasted this wine as part of a broader back-vintage tasting, and we were taken by how completely not-over-the-hill it was. In fact, it is still charging up the hill with drive and power. We have put a conservative drinking window of now 'til 2030 on this, but I wouldn't be surprised if it drank well into the 30s. A winter berry mix and fresh jam concentrate sits at the centre of the palate. Leather, cedar, and sweet spices are certainly present, but not yet dominating. An intense liquorice underscores the wine throughout. Power, concentration, and ripe tannin mark the finish. Ten months of new French oak weaves its way through ripples of fruit, chocolate, and earthy delights. This is centre-of-the-table, something to celebrate wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz demonstrates the exceptional ageing potential that premium Heathcote wines are renowned for. The combination of concentrated fruit, structured tannins, and ten months of new French oak has created a wine with remarkable longevity. Rather than showing signs of decline, it's still displaying vibrant fruit character alongside developing secondary flavours of leather and cedar, indicating it was built for the long haul and could easily cellar until 2030 or beyond.

Heathcote's ancient Cambrian soils, rich in iron and quartz, produce Shiraz with exceptional depth and mineral complexity. The region's continental climate with warm days and cool nights allows for extended ripening while retaining natural acidity. This terroir combination creates wines with intense liquorice notes and structured tannins - exactly what you'll find in this bottle - making Heathcote one of Australia's most exciting emerging regions for premium Shiraz.

Decant this wine 1-2 hours before serving to allow the concentrated flavours to open up and the tannins to soften. Serve at 16-18°C in large Burgundy glasses to capture the complex aromatics of winter berries, spices, and oak. Given its power and concentration, this is perfect for special occasions and pairs beautifully with rich dishes like braised lamb, aged beef, or strong cheeses that can match its intensity.

A Museum Release indicates this wine has been carefully cellared by the winery in optimal conditions before release, often representing their finest vintages held back for extended ageing. This practice allows the wine to develop complex secondary and tertiary flavours that can't be rushed. The fact this 2010 is being released now as a Museum wine suggests the winery recognised its exceptional quality and ageing potential from the start.

The 2010 vintage in Australia is celebrated for producing wines with exceptional balance between power and elegance. Cool, wet conditions early in the season followed by a warm, dry harvest period created ideal ripening conditions. This allowed grapes to develop intense flavours while retaining natural acidity and structure - exactly what you see in this Shiraz with its combination of ripe fruit concentration and firm tannins that continue to provide backbone after 14 years.
