The Clare Valley might be famous for riesling, but the truth is, some of the highest-quality, most age-worthy shiraz in the country has been humbly produced in the Clare for many, many years. This is a prime example: youthful, powerful fruit, leathery tertiary notes and a sublime tannin/acid structure. This one is the definition of the cliché 'aged to perfection'.

Why do we love this wine?

This wine was built to age, right from the very start - specific rows, of specific vineyards, in specific micro-climates, are chosen for their aging potential. The result is a wine, produced in 2010, that was always intended to be enjoyed now, some 15+ years later. The depth of flavour and concentration of fruit is outstanding, but there's so much more to this wine. Remarkably smooth yet sternly structured, the lively acidity and tannin have not been lost time here, in fact, this wine has lost nothing to time, only added complexity. The classic aged notes of leather and tobacco only act to enhance and contextualise the dark, mulled fruit and youthful acid. This wine looks young and old at the same time, in the best possible way. There's a reason that this producer was one of the original pioneers of the screw cap - it allows them to create wines that age like THIS! Wow!

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine was specifically crafted for extended ageing from carefully selected vineyard rows in optimal micro-climates. The producer's pioneering use of screw caps has preserved the wine's integrity while allowing it to develop remarkable complexity. Rather than losing vitality over time, it has gained layers of leather and tobacco notes that beautifully complement the concentrated dark fruit, creating a wine that appears both youthful and mature simultaneously.

Clare Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create the perfect conditions for Shiraz that can develop over decades. The region's temperature variations help retain natural acidity while building concentrated flavours, which is evident in this wine's lively acid structure after 15 years. The valley's reputation for producing structured, cellar-worthy reds is exemplified by this wine's ability to maintain its tannin backbone while developing complex secondary characteristics.

Receiving 95 points from three respected critics - Mike Bennie, Nick Ryan, and Jeni Port - indicates exceptional consensus about this wine's outstanding quality. Such uniform high scoring across different palates suggests the wine displays textbook characteristics of premium aged Shiraz. The additional 'Museum Release' designation confirms this is a wine of collectible standard, representing the pinnacle of the producer's winemaking capabilities.

The wine's rich concentration of blackcurrant and dark chocolate flavours, combined with its leather and tobacco complexity, makes it perfect for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, aged beef, or game meats. The smooth yet structured tannins can handle rich sauces and strong cheeses, while the maintained acidity cuts through fatty dishes beautifully. Consider pairing with dishes that echo the wine's earthy, developed characteristics - think mushroom-based preparations or herb-crusted roasts.

This wine is drinking beautifully right now, having reached its intended drinking window after 15 years of careful ageing. The seamless integration of fruit, tannins, and developed characteristics suggests it's at peak maturity. However, given its exceptional structure and the producer's track record with screw cap ageing, it could continue to evolve gracefully for several more years, though the current drinking experience showcases exactly what the winemaker envisioned when crafting this age-worthy Shiraz.
