The Clare Valley might be famous for riesling, but the truth is, some of the highest-quality, most age-worthy shiraz in the country has been humbly produced in the Clare for many, many years. This is a prime example: youthful, powerful fruit, leathery tertiary notes and a sublime tannin/acid structure. This one is the definition of the cliché 'aged to perfection'.

Why do we love this wine?

This wine was built to age, right from the very start - specific rows, of specific vineyards, in specific micro-climates, are chosen for their aging potential. The result is a wine, produced in 2009, that was always intended to be enjoyed now, some 15+ years later. The depth of flavour and concentration of fruit is outstanding, but there's so much more to this wine. Remarkably smooth yet sternly structured, the lively acidity and tannin have not been lost time here, in fact, this wine has lost nothing to time, only added complexity. The classic aged notes of leather and tobacco only act to enhance and contextualise the dark, mulled fruit and youthful acid. This wine looks young and old at the same time, in the best possible way. There's a reason that this producer was one of the original pioneers of the screw cap - it allows them to create wines that age like THIS! Wow!

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a museum release that was specifically crafted for extended ageing from carefully selected vineyard rows in optimal micro-climates. The producer intentionally held back this wine, knowing it would reach its peak drinking window now, allowing the tannins to soften whilst developing complex secondary flavours of leather and tobacco. The screw cap closure has preserved the wine's integrity perfectly, demonstrating how modern closures can facilitate long-term ageing just as effectively as traditional cork.

Clare Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create the perfect conditions for structured, long-lived Shiraz with natural acidity that acts as a preservative during extended cellaring. The region's temperature variations between day and night help retain the bright acidity that's still evident in this 15-year-old wine. This natural balance of fruit concentration and structural elements is why Clare Valley Shiraz can develop such remarkable complexity over time whilst maintaining freshness.

These exceptional scores from respected critics Andrew Caillard and Ken Gargett place this wine in the elite category of Australian Shiraz. Such high ratings typically indicate a wine with perfect balance, complexity, and ageing potential - qualities that are now fully realised after 15 years of development. The 5-star Halliday rating for the producer further confirms this is from a consistently excellent winery known for crafting wines of this calibre.

The wine's rich blackberry and blood plum flavours, combined with developed leather and tobacco notes, make it perfect for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, aged beef, or game meats. The oaky characteristics and full body can stand up to strong flavours like blue cheese or mushroom-based dishes. The wine's maturity and complexity also make it excellent with charcuterie boards featuring aged salamis and hard cheeses.

This wine is drinking beautifully now, having reached its intended peak after 15 years of careful ageing - exactly as the winemaker planned. The description notes it maintains youthful acidity whilst displaying perfect integration of mature flavours, indicating optimal drinking condition. However, given its exceptional structure and the producer's track record with screw cap ageing, it could continue to develop gracefully for several more years if stored properly.
