Why do we love this wine?

First and foremost: fruit. It's the hallmark of any well-aged wine, how well the fruit presents itself aromatically. Here it sings - fully and completely. A beautiful berry mix with raspberries and plum leading the way - classic McLaren Vale in every way. Lifted and punchy acidity gives the wine youthful zeal and allows both the fruit and tertiary development to really shine. There's a little bit of a savoury green, grassy note that provides an all important freshness to the fruit profile. Powerful to be sure - it has a rich, dense core. Some medicinal eucalypt chimes in late in the piece, rounding out the sweet aromatics with some sophistication. This is a really special wine and a study in what aged wine can and should look like. If ever we needed to convert someone to the nuance, intricacy, and sheer other-worldly enjoyment of aged reds, this is what we would reach for.

Frequently Asked Questions

This McLaren Vale Shiraz demonstrates the transformative power of proper cellaring, where 16 years of bottle age has created layers of complexity impossible in young wines. The fruit has evolved from primary berry flavours into a sophisticated symphony of raspberries, plum, and medicinal eucalyptus, while maintaining the lifted acidity that keeps it vibrant. It's a textbook example of how premium Australian Shiraz develops tertiary characters whilst preserving its regional identity, making it an ideal introduction to the nuanced world of mature reds.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create Shiraz with a unique combination of power and elegance, evident in this wine's rich, dense core balanced by fresh acidity. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, allowing for extended ripening that develops complex berry profiles whilst retaining natural acidity. This particular bottle showcases the classic McLaren Vale style - full-bodied yet refined, with the characteristic mix of dark fruits and savoury earthiness that distinguishes it from the more structured Barossa or elegant Eden Valley expressions.

Decant this wine 1-2 hours before serving to allow the complex aromatics to fully express themselves and any sediment to settle. Serve at 16-18°C to highlight both the fruit intensity and the sophisticated tertiary development that has occurred over 16 years. The wine's full-bodied nature and medicinal eucalyptus notes pair beautifully with rich, gamey meats or aged cheeses, where the savoury elements can complement rather than compete with the food.

The savoury green notes represent sophisticated tertiary development that occurs only in well-made wines with proper cellaring potential. These characters, combined with the medicinal eucalyptus, indicate the wine has successfully transitioned from primary fruit-driven flavours to complex mature expressions without losing freshness. In premium aged Shiraz, these herbaceous elements provide crucial balance to the rich fruit core, preventing the wine from becoming overly jammy or one-dimensional - a hallmark of exceptional winemaking and ideal storage conditions.

At 16 years old, this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, having reached that sweet spot where fruit, acidity, and tertiary complexity are in perfect harmony. The description emphasises how well the fruit presents itself aromatically, suggesting peak drinking window rather than a wine that needs more time. However, given its lifted acidity and dense core structure, it likely has another 5-8 years of graceful evolution ahead, allowing you to either enjoy its current perfection or watch it develop even more nuanced characteristics.
