This is the wine that (pretty much) single-handedly put Bendigo back on the wine map. From an extremely low-yielding, premium vineyard at Maiden Gully, cellared to concentrated, complex perfection. This is a genuine opportunity for collectors, however seriously you take it.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Dense black fruits, herbaceous and spicy with a weighty, oak-supported backbone and soft tannins on the lingering finish. 15+ years of bottle age has brought a deep complexity and added all those wonderful tertiary notes that us aged-red-heads are constantly searching for. An early adopter of the screw-cap closure, this producer was looking firmly toward the future (even back in the early naughties), and the grace and elegance with which this wine has aged is a testament to that foresight. We're completely stoked with this drop. If it's not perfect, it's pretty bloody close.

Frequently Asked Questions

The producer's early adoption of screw-cap closures has been crucial to this wine's exceptional ageing. Unlike traditional cork closures, screw-caps prevent oxidation and cork taint while allowing controlled micro-oxygenation. This has preserved the wine's fruit integrity while allowing complex tertiary flavours to develop naturally. The full-bodied structure and oak backbone have provided the necessary framework for graceful evolution over time.

Bendigo's continental climate and ancient Cambrian soils create ideal conditions for producing structured, age-worthy Shiraz. The region's warm days and cool nights help retain acidity while developing intense fruit flavours. This terroir typically produces wines with the herbaceous and spicy characteristics evident in this bottle, along with the dense black fruit concentration that defines premium Bendigo Shiraz.

Tertiary notes are complex flavours that develop during bottle ageing, beyond the primary fruit and secondary fermentation characters. In this 15-year-old Shiraz, these include earthy, leather, tobacco, and forest floor nuances that complement the original charred, mocha, and redcurrant flavours. These tertiary characteristics add layers of complexity that can't be achieved in young wines, making aged bottles particularly sought after by collectors.

Decant this wine 1-2 hours before serving to allow it to breathe and fully express its complex aromatics. Serve at 16-18°C to showcase both the fruit concentration and developed tertiary characters. The soft tannins and lingering finish make it perfect for pairing with rich, savoury dishes like braised lamb, aged cheeses, or game meats that won't overpower the wine's elegant complexity.

Multiple 95-point scores from respected critics like James Halliday and The Real Review indicate exceptional quality and consistency. These ratings reflect the wine's perfect balance of power and elegance, its successful ageing potential, and the producer's winemaking excellence. Such unanimous critical acclaim across different rating systems suggests this is a benchmark example of premium Australian Shiraz at full maturity.
