Yes, we know we can't tell you the producer, BUT, trust us, you'll be blown away when this arrives at your door. Pretty close to as premium as McLaren Vale shiraz can get. Serious collectors would do well to jump at this offering...

Why do we love this wine?

This producer is one of McLaren Vale’s greatest of all time and this is a wine that is made only in the greatest of vintages; only the best barrels are chosen to be aged in oak for an additional three years and then laid down to rest. As a result, only a tiny amount of this wine was produced, and we are so lucky to be offering it today. This shiraz is spicy and savoury, with amazing intensity of fruit and well integrated tannin from years just resting in the bottle, ‘polymerising’ aka. getting silky and balanced. Time has also brought all those secondary characters into play, making for a wonderfully layered and deep wine. Awesome length. Very satisfying. A great buy for collectors and drinkers alike!

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine represents the pinnacle of McLaren Vale shiraz production, crafted only in exceptional vintages using the finest barrels selected from one of the region's most legendary producers. After initial oak ageing, it received an additional three years in barrel before being laid down to rest, allowing the tannins to polymerise and develop the silky, integrated structure that defines truly great aged shiraz. The result is a wine of extraordinary rarity and complexity that showcases what happens when time, terroir, and exceptional winemaking converge.

Extended bottle maturation has allowed this shiraz to develop the coveted secondary and tertiary characteristics that separate great wines from good ones. The primary fruit has evolved into deeper, more complex flavours while the tannins have softened and integrated beautifully through polymerisation. This natural process creates the silky mouthfeel and layered complexity described, with tobacco and liquorice notes emerging alongside the original fruit intensity - a transformation that can only occur through patient cellaring.

The consistent high scores from Wine Orbit (98pts), Halliday Wine Companion (95pts), and The Real Review (95pts, plus #10 Top 2008 Shiraz) reflect this wine's exceptional quality and perfect expression of McLaren Vale terroir. These ratings acknowledge not just the wine's immediate appeal, but its remarkable ageing potential and the producer's legendary status in the region. Such unanimous critical acclaim across different tasting panels indicates a wine of genuine distinction that represents benchmark Australian shiraz.

The wine's rich, full-bodied profile and complex flavour spectrum of coconut, liquorice, and tobacco make it ideal for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the wine's savoury elements will complement the protein's richness. The integrated tannins and spicy character also pair beautifully with strong cheeses or dishes featuring earthy mushrooms and herbs, creating harmonious flavour bridges.

This shiraz is perfectly positioned in its drinking window, offering immediate pleasure for those who appreciate fully mature, complex wines with silky tannins and developed secondary characters. However, given the producer's reputation and the wine's exceptional structure, it has the potential to continue evolving gracefully for several more years. Whether you choose to enjoy it now or cellar it further depends on your preference for the current savoury complexity versus allowing even more tertiary development to emerge.
