This is the wine that (pretty much) single-handedly put Bendigo back on the wine map. From an extremely low-yielding, premium vineyard at Maiden Gully, cellared to concentrated, complex perfection. This is a genuine opportunity for collectors, however seriously you take it.

Why do we love this wine?

Although frost limited yields to just 20 tonnes from an entire 70 acre estate (that's a tiny amount by the way), the fruit that made it into this iconic drop was nothing but the toughest, most concentrated and highest quality. An early adopter of the screw-cap closure, this producer was looking firmly toward the future (even back in the early naughties), and the grace and elegance with which this wine has aged is a testament to that foresight. Dense black fruits, herbaceous and spicy with a weighty, oak-supported backbone and soft tannins on the lingering finish. 15 - 20 years of bottle age has brought a deep complexity and added all those wonderful tertiary notes that us aged-red-heads are constantly searching for. In a word: Brilliant.

Frequently Asked Questions

With 15-20 years of bottle age, this Shiraz has reached that coveted museum release status where primary fruit flavours have evolved into complex tertiary characteristics. The screw-cap closure has preserved the wine's integrity beautifully, allowing it to develop the deep complexity and sophisticated notes that only come with extended cellaring. Museum releases like this are rare finds that showcase how premium Australian Shiraz can gracefully mature into something truly exceptional.

The 2007 vintage was marked by severe frost that devastated yields to just 20 tonnes from a massive 70-acre estate - that's incredibly low production. While challenging for the producer, this natural selection meant only the most concentrated, highest-quality fruit survived to make it into the final wine. The result is an intensely flavourful Shiraz with exceptional depth and character that reflects the vineyard's struggle and triumph in equal measure.

Bendigo's continental climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for producing structured, age-worthy Shiraz with distinctive regional character. The area's warm days and cool nights help develop the dense black fruit flavours and spicy complexity evident in this wine, while the region's geological diversity contributes to the herbaceous notes and weighty backbone. This terroir expression, combined with the producer's winemaking philosophy, has created a Shiraz that truly speaks of place.

The wine's full-bodied nature, soft tannins, and complex tertiary flavours make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-braised lamb shanks, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the leather and spice notes will complement the protein's depth. The herbaceous qualities also pair beautifully with dishes featuring rosemary, thyme, or other Mediterranean herbs, while the cranberry notes provide a lovely counterpoint to rich, umami-driven sauces.

This Shiraz is drinking beautifully right now, having reached that perfect sweet spot where youthful power has mellowed into elegant complexity. The soft tannins and integrated oak suggest it's at peak maturity, offering immediate drinking pleasure with all those sought-after tertiary characteristics fully developed. While it could potentially age further, there's no need to wait - this is the kind of wine that rewards opening tonight to experience its full glory.
