This is the wine that (pretty much) single-handedly put Bendigo back on the wine map. From an extremely low-yielding, premium vineyard at Maiden Gully, cellared to concentrated, complex perfection. This is a genuine opportunity for collectors, however seriously you take it.

Why do we love this wine?

Although frost limited yields to just 20 tonnes from an entire 70 acre estate (that's a tiny amount by the way), the fruit that made it into this iconic drop was nothing but the toughest, most concentrated and highest quality. An early adopter of the screw-cap closure, this producer was looking firmly toward the future (even back in the early naughties), and the grace and elegance with which this wine has aged is a testament to that foresight. Dense black fruits, herbaceous and spicy with a weighty, oak-supported backbone and soft tannins on the lingering finish. 15 - 20 years of bottle age has brought a deep complexity and added all those wonderful tertiary notes that us aged-red-heads are constantly searching for. In a word: Brilliant.

Frequently Asked Questions

With 15-20 years of bottle age, this Shiraz has reached that coveted museum release status where primary fruit flavours have evolved into complex tertiary characteristics. The extended ageing has developed those sought-after leather and spice notes that only time can create, transforming the wine from its youthful exuberance into a sophisticated, mature expression. Museum releases like this are rare finds that showcase how premium Bendigo Shiraz can gracefully evolve over decades.

The 2007 vintage was marked by severe frost that devastated yields to just 20 tonnes from a massive 70-acre estate - that's roughly 80% less fruit than normal. While challenging for the producer, this natural selection meant only the most resilient, concentrated grapes survived, creating an intensely flavourful wine. The scarcity and exceptional quality of fruit from this vintage, combined with the producer's forward-thinking use of screwcap closures, has resulted in a wine that's aged beautifully and earned prestigious recognition.

The cranberry notes represent the wine's evolved fruit character - what started as dense black fruits has transformed through ageing into more nuanced red berry flavours with bright acidity. The leather characteristics are classic tertiary flavours that develop in premium aged reds, adding earthy complexity and sophistication. Together with the spice elements, these flavours create a harmonious balance between fruit freshness and mature, savoury depth that defines exceptional aged Shiraz.

Bendigo's continental climate and ancient soils produce Shiraz with distinctive textural weight and savoury complexity rather than just fruit-forward sweetness. The 'textured' aspect refers to the wine's substantial mouthfeel and oak-supported backbone, while 'savoury' indicates the herbaceous, spicy, and earthy elements that balance the fruit. This style is characteristic of premium Bendigo Shiraz, where the terroir imparts a more European-influenced, food-friendly profile compared to fruit-driven styles from warmer regions.

In 2007, screwcap closures were still relatively controversial in premium wine circles, but this producer was an early adopter who recognised their superior ageing potential. Screwcaps eliminate cork taint risk and provide more consistent oxygen transmission rates, allowing wines to develop tertiary complexity while maintaining freshness. The graceful evolution of this 15-20 year old wine proves their foresight was correct - it's developed beautiful aged characteristics without any of the oxidation or cork-related faults that can plague traditionally sealed wines.
