A seriously special shiraz, straight from the family's personal cellar. It's no surprise that producers and their families drink the good stuff. It is a surprise that they give us access to wines like this, a real opportunity.

Why do we love this wine?

A wonderfully developed Hunter shiraz from a deadset Australian wine legend, one for lovers of premium aged wines. Soft, smooth, rich and robust. It's a genuine treat to be able to drink the wines that producers drink at home. Red cherries and raspberry acidity are the dominant fruit flavours whilst nearly 20 years in the cellar has imparted leather, tobacco, prune and oaky notes. Hunter Valley shiraz is famous for two reasons. Reason 1: As youthful a wine, the regional spice and bright red fruit are uniquely at the forefront and bring a freshness that lingers on the palate for what feels like months. Reason: 2: When allowed to mature, Hunter shiraz really shows you what it's made of. The spice and brightness remain but the texture and structure turn to pure silk. If you're a real fan of aged shiraz, this is going to be right up your alley, if you're not, it makes a very very impressive Christmas present.

Frequently Asked Questions

This museum release showcases the remarkable transformation that occurs when Hunter Valley Shiraz is allowed to mature properly. The wine has evolved from its youthful bright red fruit character into a sophisticated expression with leather, tobacco, and prune notes layered over the original cherry and raspberry core. The texture has developed into what's described as 'pure silk', demonstrating why Hunter Valley is renowned for producing Shiraz that rewards patient cellaring.

Hunter Valley Shiraz is unique among Australian regions for its distinctive spice profile and bright red fruit character that remains prominent even after extended ageing. Unlike the dense, chocolatey styles from Barossa or the elegant, cool-climate expressions from Adelaide Hills, Hunter Shiraz maintains a freshness and regional spice that creates a lingering palate impression. This wine exemplifies both stages of Hunter Shiraz evolution - the youthful vibrancy and the mature silk-like texture.

The wine's developed leather and tobacco notes, combined with its full-bodied structure and soft tannins, make it ideal for rich, slow-cooked dishes like braised lamb shanks or beef bourguignon. The cherry and raspberry acidity provides enough brightness to cut through fatty meats, while the mature complexity complements aged cheeses and charcuterie. Game meats like venison or duck would also harmonise beautifully with the wine's earthy, developed character.

After nearly two decades of careful cellaring, this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now and represents the perfect window for enjoying mature Hunter Valley Shiraz. The description of 'soft, smooth, rich and robust' indicates the wine has reached its optimal drinking phase where the tannins have fully integrated and the complex secondary flavours have developed. While it could potentially hold for a few more years, there's no need to wait - this is exactly what aged Australian Shiraz should taste like.

A museum release indicates this wine has been held back by the producer in their own cellars rather than being sold immediately upon release. This is significant because it means the wine has been stored under optimal conditions and represents the producer's vision of how their wine should taste when properly aged. It's essentially getting access to the producer's private cellar stock - wines they've been drinking at home - which explains why it's described as 'a genuine treat' and demonstrates the winemaker's confidence in their wine's ageing potential.
