This old dog's got a bit of fight yet! Don't worry about that! Polished but powerful. A celebration of red and dark fruits with mocha and liquorice nuances thrown in for good measure. Finessed and incredibly fine-grained savoury tannins - sounds like McLaren Vale to us! After a long nap in the cellar this one is dialled in and delivering on all the promise of its youth - WOW!

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Wonderfully textured, the wine is built around a long mineral acidity which carries intensity through the palate. Black pepper, cedar and elegant allspice notes linger throughout the lengthy, linear finish. Matured for 20+ months in new French and new American hogshead barrels - drink it now or dig a hole in your backyard and forget about it. Even with the age this one's already got, you could go another couple of years if you're feeling lazy - we're willing to bet you won't be able to keep your hands off it for that long!

This offer is STRICTLY limited to 1 x 6pk per customer!

Frequently Asked Questions

At over 20 years old, this McLaren Vale Shiraz has reached museum release status, meaning it's been carefully cellared and is now drinking at peak maturity. The extended ageing has allowed the wine's tannins to soften and integrate beautifully, while developing complex tertiary flavours that only emerge with time. Museum releases like this are rare finds that showcase how premium Australian Shiraz can evolve into something truly exceptional with proper cellaring.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Shiraz, allowing the variety to develop its signature rich, full-bodied character. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, ensuring grapes ripen slowly and retain natural acidity - evident in this wine's mineral backbone. This terroir combination produces Shiraz with the intensity and structure needed for long-term cellaring, as demonstrated by this wine's exceptional 97-point Parker rating after two decades.

The 20+ month maturation in both new French and American hogsheads creates a complex oak integration that enhances rather than dominates the fruit. French oak contributes the elegant cedar and spice notes, while American oak adds subtle vanilla and coconut undertones that complement the wine's natural black pepper character. This dual-oak approach allows the wine's mineral acidity and fruit intensity to shine through while adding layers of complexity that continue to evolve in the glass.

While this 2003 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, premium McLaren Vale Shiraz with this level of structure and acidity can continue evolving for several more years. The wine's mineral backbone and integrated tannins suggest it has the framework to develop further complexity, though many collectors find the temptation to drink museum releases irresistible. Given its current peak drinking window and exceptional ratings, there's no wrong choice between enjoying it now or cellaring it further.

This mature Shiraz's meaty, liquorice, and black olive characteristics make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes like slow-braised lamb, aged beef, or game meats. The wine's developed tannins and mineral acidity can handle bold flavours and rich sauces, while its elegant spice notes complement herbs like rosemary and thyme. The extended oak maturation also makes it an excellent match for aged cheeses or dishes featuring earthy mushrooms and black olives.
