More than two decades on, this 2001 Barossa shiraz is still very much alive and kicking. From one of the region’s finest producers, it’s developed all the hallmarks of a complete classic: deep colour, rich fruit, and a savoury, spicy edge that only time can deliver. Aged? Yes. Tired? Not even close.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This is old-school Barossa shiraz from a genuinely top-shelf producer - and it’s still got plenty to give. Plum, spice, stewed fruit and black pepper propped up by super-fine, mellow tannins - a beautifully aged red that proves that, sometimes, time can be a very good friend. The nose is pure varietal charm - blackberry, plum, vanilla and spice, still lifted, still expressive. The palate’s softened with age but it's no less compelling, with layers of complex flavours unfolding gently as the wine opens up. Tannins are fine and well-resolved, giving this wine a smooth glide to a warm, spiced finish. This isn’t about brute force - it’s a study in grace and maturity. A piece of history, ready to savour right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barossa Valley's warm climate and ancient soils produce shiraz with exceptional structure and concentration, allowing premium examples to age gracefully for decades. The 2001 vintage was particularly outstanding in the Barossa, with ideal ripening conditions that created wines with balanced acidity and robust tannins. This wine's evolution from youthful power to mature elegance demonstrates how quality Australian shiraz develops complex secondary flavours like tobacco and spice while maintaining its core fruit character.

Museum releases are wines that producers hold back in their cellars for extended ageing before releasing to market, often 10-20 years after vintage. This practice allows the winery to showcase how their wines develop with proper cellaring conditions. The fact this 2001 shiraz is being released now as a museum wine indicates the producer's confidence in its ageing potential and represents a rare opportunity to purchase a fully mature, professionally-aged wine.

Mature shiraz like this 2001 reveals its complexity gradually through decanting or extended glass time. Initially, you'll notice the primary fruit has evolved into deeper, more concentrated flavours of stewed plum and blackberry. As it breathes, secondary characteristics emerge - vanilla from oak integration, earthy tobacco notes, and warming spices like cloves and black pepper. The tannins, once firm, have softened and integrated, creating a seamless, velvety texture that allows these layered flavours to unfold beautifully.

The wine's mature, full-bodied character and complex spice profile make it perfect for rich, slow-cooked dishes that can match its intensity. Think braised lamb shanks, beef bourguignon, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's developed tannins won't overpower the food. The tobacco and earthy notes also complement game meats beautifully, while the residual fruit sweetness pairs wonderfully with dark chocolate desserts or strong, aged cheddar.

This wine is drinking at its peak right now, having reached that sweet spot where youthful vigour has transformed into mature complexity without losing vitality. While quality Barossa shiraz can continue evolving for years, this 2001 is already showing the graceful, resolved character that makes aged wine so special. The description suggests it's ready to enjoy immediately, with well-integrated tannins and expressive aromatics that indicate optimal drinking condition rather than a wine that needs more time.
