Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Sure, you might know Barossa shiraz, but the next best thing absolutely has to be the GSM blends from this mighty region. This one leans a little on the meatier side, which will happen when you go a little heavier handed than usual on the mataro in the blend. We're not mad about this one at all; it packs a serious punch, with ripe blackberries, blueberry pie, baking spices and tobacco leaf mingling beautifully in a smoothly textured palate.

Frequently Asked Questions

GSM stands for Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro (Mourvèdre), a classic Rhône-style blend that thrives in Barossa's warm climate. This particular blend leans heavier on the Mataro component, which adds a distinctive meaty, earthy character that complements the region's bold winemaking style. The combination creates wines with more complexity and food-friendliness than single varietals, making GSM blends the 'next best thing' after Barossa's famous shiraz.

The 2018 vintage represents a wine that's now reaching its optimal drinking window, with enough bottle age to integrate the bold Barossa fruit with the blend's structural elements. At five years old, the initial power has mellowed into a smoother texture while retaining the ripe blackberry and blueberry characteristics. This vintage should continue drinking beautifully for another 3-5 years, allowing the tobacco and spice notes to develop further complexity.

The meaty character from the Mataro component makes this wine exceptional with grilled red meats, particularly lamb with herbs or beef brisket. The baking spices and tobacco notes complement dishes with earthy flavours like mushroom risotto or aged cheeses. The wine's full body and ripe fruit profile can also handle spicier cuisines, making it versatile enough for barbecue, Mediterranean dishes, or even hearty pasta with rich tomato-based sauces.

The consistent 90-point scores from Wine Orbit, Cult Producer status, and From the Cellar reflect the wine's exceptional balance and regional typicity. Critics recognised how Schild Estate successfully crafted a GSM that showcases Barossa's strengths while maintaining elegance through smooth texture integration. The ratings acknowledge both the wine's immediate appeal with its ripe fruit expression and its potential for continued development, marking it as a standout example of Australian GSM blending.

Schild Estate's decision to emphasise Mataro in the blend demonstrates their commitment to creating distinctive wines rather than following conventional formulas. This approach results in the wine's notably meaty character while maintaining the smooth texture that prevents it from being overly rustic. Their winemaking philosophy balances power with finesse, allowing the tobacco leaf and baking spice elements to emerge naturally rather than being overwhelmed by excessive oak or extraction.
