If you like your sangio on the richer, riper side, this one’s a belter. There's a reason it's picked up 95 points and a 'Special Value Award' from Halliday... Think plush dark cherry, mocha and choc-licorice, with a savoury edge of game and sage. It’s got proper depth and concentration, but what makes it sing is that classic blood orange tang cutting through - classic sangiovese freshness that keeps you reaching for another glass. Tannins are fine and dusty, giving it that proper Italian grip without going feral.

Why do we love this wine?

The owner, winemaker (and all round rockstar), of this fantastic wine, is a woman on a mission. She creates wines that are a tribute to her family and the 5 matriarchs, with 5 rogue husbands, that make it up. This sangiovese captures her vibe perfectly but, more importantly, it captures the place from which it originates, the Clare Valley. Rich and ripe, there’s a reason people reach for this food-friendly red and any and every opportunity. There’s plenty of structure too! The combination of sour cherry and dusty tannin is what this wine is all about. That and food. This is a wine you could comfortably drink with anything from anchovies to steak.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clare Valley's Mediterranean-style climate with warm days and cool nights creates perfect conditions for Sangiovese to develop its characteristic sour cherry flavours while maintaining natural acidity. The region's diverse soils and elevation variations allow the grape to express both power and elegance, resulting in wines with the dusty tannin structure that makes this variety so food-friendly. This terroir-driven approach helps Australian Sangiovese compete with its Italian counterparts.

Sangiovese's naturally high acidity and medium tannins make it incredibly versatile with food, cutting through rich dishes while complementing lighter fare. The wine's savoury, gamey notes and black cherry fruit provide a flavour bridge that works with everything from tomato-based pasta to grilled meats. Its textured, medium-bodied profile means it won't overpower delicate dishes like anchovies, yet has enough structure to stand up to robust steaks.

A 95-point score from James Halliday represents exceptional quality, placing this wine in the top tier of Australian releases. Combined with the Special Value Award, it indicates outstanding quality-to-price ratio - a rare achievement that suggests the wine punches well above its weight class. The Gold Medal from Melbourne International Wine Show further validates its excellence among international competition, making this a standout example of Australian Sangiovese.

The 2022 vintage in Clare Valley produced wines with excellent concentration and balanced ripeness, allowing this Sangiovese to showcase both power and finesse. The rich, ripe character mentioned reflects ideal growing conditions that enhanced the grape's natural cherry fruit while preserving the variety's signature earthiness and structure. This vintage timing means the wine is drinking beautifully now while having the backbone to develop further complexity over the next 3-5 years.

This family narrative reflects the rebellious, pioneering spirit often found in boutique Australian winemaking, where personal stories become part of the wine's identity. The 'rogue' element suggests a willingness to take risks and challenge conventions, which translates into distinctive winemaking choices that set this Sangiovese apart from mass-produced alternatives. It represents the growing movement of women winemakers in Australia who are crafting wines that honour tradition while expressing their unique vision and terroir.
