Vic's King Valley (more lovingly known as little Italy) has been serving up pretty decadent tastes of Tuscany for decades - and this delightful sangiovese is no different. With hints of Chinese five spice, a touch of red berry and a savoury finish it's bound to take you right back to the iconic Italian wine region's lyrical landscapes.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This homegrown sangiovese truly tastes as good it's Italian ancestors! Bursting with berries, spice and assertive tannins that flow into a soft but savoury finish, it's the kind of drop that will have you flourishing your hand and unironically using words like "bellisimo" as you pour another glass. It boasts some classic oak maturation too and before you even ask, it pairs perfectly with the kind of rich tomato pasta that belongs on a garden table in Tuscany, obviously. Let this drop breathe for at least half an hour before you pour a glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sangiovese's assertive tannins and complex berry-spice profile need time to open up and integrate properly. The half-hour breathing period allows the wine's oak maturation elements to harmonise with the fruit, softening those bold tannins into the described savoury finish. This is particularly important for medium-bodied reds like this King Valley expression, where proper aeration reveals the full spectrum of flavours from rhubarb to vanilla.

King Valley's cool climate and unique terroir create Sangiovese with distinctly Australian characteristics while maintaining the varietal's Italian soul. The region's elevation and temperature variations produce wines with brighter acidity and more pronounced fruit flavours than many Tuscan examples. This 2022 vintage showcases how Australian winemakers have mastered the grape's tendency towards savoury complexity while adding their own regional signature of rhubarb and sour cherry notes.

King Valley's high altitude and cool climate mirror the conditions that make Sangiovese thrive in Italy's hill regions. The area's significant diurnal temperature variation helps preserve the grape's natural acidity while allowing for full flavour development. These conditions are perfect for producing the textured, savoury style that Sangiovese is renowned for, resulting in wines with both power and elegance.

While rich tomato pasta is classic, this wine's medium body and savoury tannins make it incredibly versatile with food. The rhubarb and sour cherry notes complement grilled lamb with herbs, while the vanilla oak elements pair beautifully with aged cheeses and charcuterie. The wine's assertive structure can also handle heartier dishes like osso buco or mushroom risotto, where the savoury finish enhances umami-rich flavours.

This 2022 vintage is drinking beautifully now, especially with proper decanting to showcase its current berry and spice profile. However, Sangiovese's natural structure and oak maturation suggest it will develop additional complexity over the next 3-5 years. The assertive tannins will continue to integrate, while the savoury elements become more pronounced, making it an excellent candidate for both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring.
