This small organic producer, San Polino, are sought after by those in the know and stumbled upon by the lucky. We count ourselves extremely lucky. Their Rosso had a family resemblance with their mind-blowing top wines, all very well-made from their lofty vineyards in the heart of Italy.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

As a wine this is completely charming in every way. Fresh and chewy sangiovese, bright and full of berries (red and black), cherries and a touch of vanilla. Spending some of its ageing in oak, and some in tank, the fruit purity is delectable to enjoy now, and is only destined to get more irresistible with age. If you’re looking for premium sangiovese, without the earth shattering price, this is your chance. We’d serve this to you on a silver platter, but we don’t have any in the office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rosso di Montalcino is essentially the younger sibling of the famous Brunello, made from the same Sangiovese grapes in the same region but with shorter ageing requirements. While Brunello must age for at least 5 years, Rosso di Montalcino can be released after just one year, making it more approachable and affordable whilst still delivering the distinctive character of Montalcino's exceptional terroir. This 2019 San Polino offers that premium Montalcino quality without the premium price tag.

San Polino's clever use of both oak barrels and stainless steel tanks creates a beautifully balanced wine that showcases the best of both worlds. The oak contributes subtle vanilla notes and textural complexity, while the tank portion preserves the bright, pure fruit character that makes Sangiovese so appealing. This dual approach prevents the wine from becoming overly oaked whilst still adding depth and structure, resulting in a wine that's both immediately enjoyable and built for further development.

This full-bodied Sangiovese is a natural match for classic Tuscan cuisine - think grilled meats, aged cheeses, and tomato-based pasta dishes where its bright acidity can cut through rich sauces. The wine's savoury, textured profile and spice notes make it excellent with herb-crusted lamb, wild boar ragu, or even a simple margherita pizza. The key is pairing it with foods that complement rather than compete with its vibrant berry and cherry flavours.

This 2019 Rosso di Montalcino is perfectly enjoyable right now, offering immediate pleasure with its fresh, chewy texture and bright fruit character. However, Sangiovese is known for its excellent ageing potential, and this wine will likely develop more complex secondary flavours over the next 5-8 years. If you're patient, you'll be rewarded with deeper integration of flavours and more nuanced aromatics, though there's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying its youthful exuberance today.

San Polino represents the modern face of Montalcino winemaking, balancing respect for tradition with contemporary techniques that highlight fruit purity. Their decision to split ageing between oak and tank demonstrates a thoughtful approach that prioritises the expression of Sangiovese's natural character over heavy-handed winemaking. This philosophy results in wines that are both authentic to their terroir and accessible to modern palates, offering genuine Montalcino quality at prices that don't require a second mortgage.
