One of Australia's greatest wines. A classic old-vine shiraz, the stuff of dreams. To describe it as a 'super-icon' still wouldn’t be doing it justice.

Why do we love this wine?

It’s an elegant, tightly-knitted tapestry of a wine, built around varietal expression, density and terroir. It has clarity, purpose and a pedigree that will ensure an incredibly long life. Intense, rich and incredibly fleshy, this beautiful red explodes with flavour. Sweet plums, dark chocolate, raspberry compote with white pepper and cloves. Sinfully delicious and easily one of the most iconic deals we’ve done, we knew it was going to get huge scores, we just don't know how long it's going to last.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 'No. 1' designation represents Saltram's flagship expression, crafted from their finest vineyard parcels in the Barossa Valley. This wine showcases exceptional terroir-driven character with remarkable density and structure that sets it apart from standard regional offerings. The 97-point rating from Tyson Stelzer confirms its elite status among Australian Shiraz, reflecting meticulous winemaking and premium fruit selection. Its tightly-knitted composition suggests careful vineyard management and precise fermentation techniques that create extraordinary complexity.

This wine is built for exceptional longevity, with the producer noting it has 'a pedigree that will ensure an incredibly long life'. Premium Barossa Shiraz from outstanding vintages like 2017 typically peak between 8-15 years but can evolve gracefully for 20+ years when properly stored. The wine's intense structure, varietal expression, and full-bodied nature provide the backbone necessary for extended ageing. As it matures, expect the current fruit intensity to integrate with developing tertiary flavours of leather, earth, and aged spice.

The wine's rich, fleshy character and complex spice profile make it ideal for robust red meat dishes like grilled lamb with rosemary or slow-cooked beef short ribs. The dark chocolate and plum notes complement game meats beautifully, while the white pepper and clove spicing pairs excellently with barbecued steaks or char-grilled sausages. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese to match the wine's intensity. The wine's full body and tannin structure can handle rich, sauce-based dishes without being overwhelmed.

The 97-point score from Tyson Stelzer reflects the wine's exceptional balance of power and elegance, showcasing textbook Barossa Shiraz characteristics elevated to premium levels. Critics recognised its 'clarity and purpose' - hallmarks of outstanding winemaking where every element serves the wine's overall expression. The Gold medal at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show 2022 demonstrates peer recognition within the Australian wine industry. This combination of varietal authenticity, terroir expression, and technical excellence creates a wine that represents the pinnacle of modern Australian Shiraz production.

Currently, the wine displays vibrant primary fruit flavours of sweet plums and raspberry compote alongside rich dark chocolate notes, with prominent white pepper and clove spicing. The tannins are likely firm but well-integrated, providing structure without overwhelming the palate. With 3-5 years of cellaring, expect the fruit to become more concentrated while developing secondary characters like leather, tobacco, and earthy undertones. The spice elements will soften and integrate, creating a more harmonious and complex flavour profile that showcases the wine's true potential.
