The pinnacle of McLaren Vale grenache - quite literally. From the highest grenache vineyard in the Vale, this is an absolute Aussie classic. Power and 'prettiness' in perfect balance. This is one of Australia’s finest expressions of grenache. Collectible, delectable, cellarable.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

A masterclass in restraint and energy. Coiled tannins and bright acidity frame sour cherry, bloodstone, tomato leaf, and a whirl of regional spice. The palate is full-bodied yet light on its feet, and quietly complex. Power dressed as elegance. From McLaren Vale’s highest grenache vineyard, with 750-million-year-old soils, unirrigated bush-vines, and hand-tended by the Smart family for many generations, this site is pure treasure, and Stephen Pannell treats the fruit with the respect it deserves in the winery. Drink now or wait 15 years, it's really up to you.

From a near to 70-year-old vineyard. Of course, Steve Pannell knows his grenache well, and has been at the vanguard for the variety becoming a modern news headline. Very lithe and fine, pure and frisky, sheathed in silty tannin, juicy in a way and with weight set to medium or just under. Succulent red cherry, brick-ish dusty elements in woody spices and twiggy, dried herbs, a faint fennel note, salted liquorice faintly there. Fragrant too, oh so very much. Savoury scents through with just ripe cherry underlying. That tension is so appealing and refreshing. Compelling drinking.

Frequently Asked Questions

This grenache showcases the elegance and finesse that old-vine fruit can achieve when handled with restraint. Unlike many McLaren Vale reds that emphasise power and richness, Stephen Pannell has crafted a wine that balances full-bodied intensity with remarkable lightness and energy. The 750-million-year-old soils and unirrigated bush-vines contribute to the wine's unique mineral complexity and concentrated yet refined character.

This grenache offers exceptional drinking flexibility - you can enjoy it immediately for its vibrant fruit and energy, or cellar it for up to 15 years to develop greater complexity. Grenache is known for its ability to age gracefully, and the wine's coiled tannins and bright acidity provide the structural backbone needed for long-term cellaring. As it matures, expect the sour cherry notes to evolve into deeper, more savoury characteristics.

The Smart family vineyard represents McLaren Vale's highest elevation grenache site, planted with ancient unirrigated bush-vines that have been hand-tended for generations. The 750-million-year-old soils provide exceptional mineral complexity that's impossible to replicate elsewhere. This combination of altitude, old vines, and ancient geology creates fruit with natural concentration and distinctive terroir expression that sets it apart from lower-elevation sites.

The wine's herbaceous and meaty characteristics, combined with its medium body and bright acidity, make it incredibly food-friendly. Try it with Mediterranean dishes like lamb tagine, grilled vegetables with herbs, or charcuterie boards featuring aged cheeses. The tomato leaf notes also make it excellent with pasta dishes featuring rich tomato-based sauces, while the regional spice elements complement Middle Eastern and North African cuisines beautifully.

The consistent 95-96 point scores from multiple respected critics indicate this is an outstanding expression of both the variety and the vintage. When grenache achieves this level of critical acclaim, it typically means the wine successfully balances power with elegance - a difficult feat for this variety. The recognition from diverse critics like James Suckling, Halliday, and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate suggests the wine appeals across different tasting philosophies and represents exceptional value for its quality level.
