Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Deep, dark, and utterly compelling, this is a wine that gets into your and refuses to be forgotten. On the nose, it’s all rich perfume and fruit complexity - dark berries, smoked game, dried herbs, cake spice. The palate's a bit of a different story, big, plush, and powerfully structured. There’s real depth and drive here, with dense plum and blackberry fruit, muscular tannins and a long, dry finish that draws you right back in for another sip. Age has somewhat tamed the beast - the tannins are polished, the fruit is singing, and the shape and structure of the whole wine are working together beautifully. It’s still a wine of immense strength and character, but the edges are beautifully smoothed out. Expect cedar, sandalwood, spice, and a sheet of chewy, mouth-coating tannin that lasts and lasts and lasts. If you like your reds bold, brooding and built to go the distance, this is absolutely your jam.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2016 vintage has reached optimal maturity after eight years of careful ageing, allowing the initially powerful tannins to integrate beautifully with the fruit. Museum releases represent wines that have been held back by the producer to showcase how premium Shiraz develops complexity over time. This extended bottle age has transformed the wine from a youthful powerhouse into a sophisticated expression where cedar and sandalwood notes have emerged alongside the core dark fruit flavours.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create Shiraz with exceptional concentration and structure, as demonstrated in this Vermilion Bird bottling. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures while ancient geological formations contribute to the wine's mineral backbone and age-worthy tannin structure. This terroir produces Shiraz that balances power with elegance, developing complex secondary characters like the cedar and spice notes found in this mature example.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C and decant for at least 30 minutes to allow the concentrated flavours to open fully. The muscular tannin structure and dense fruit concentration benefit from aeration, which will soften the texture and reveal the wine's complex aromatic layers. Pair with rich, protein-heavy dishes like slow-cooked lamb, aged beef, or strong cheeses that can match the wine's intensity and complement its savoury spice elements.

A 96-point score from Wine Orbit places this Shiraz in the exceptional category, indicating outstanding quality that represents the pinnacle of McLaren Vale winemaking. This rating reflects the wine's perfect balance of power and finesse, complex flavour development, and exceptional ageing potential. Such high scores are reserved for wines that demonstrate technical excellence, regional typicity, and the ability to improve with further cellaring, making this a benchmark example of premium Australian Shiraz.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now with its polished tannins and integrated oak, premium McLaren Vale Shiraz of this calibre can continue developing for another 5-10 years. The wine's muscular structure and concentrated fruit provide the foundation for extended ageing, where tertiary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earth will gradually emerge. However, it's currently in a perfect drinking window where primary fruit, secondary development, and structural elements are harmoniously balanced.
