Rosenvale will be no stranger to many Mofos. That said, if you've been unlucky enough to miss out thus far, this wine will be a wonderful introduction. Structured, juicy, plush and oaky - this one ticks all the boxes.

Why do we love this wine?

This wonderful GSM is from one of the best spots in the Barossa. From old-vines that were planted in the 1930s, bringing intensity and complexity, it's a wine that has rewarded patience. It is a classic, old-school, Barossa GSM, brimming with fruit and after a good stint in oak (all French), fruit and tannin are exquisitely integrated. That said, it’s still youthful so you’ll see lively fruit - plums, berries, blueberries - along with a real spiciness. This vibrancy will mellow over the next few years and we've got no doubt that it will just become more and more interesting - if you can manage to leave it alone for a couple of years... we wouldn't be able to.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the exceptional terroir of Vine Vale Road, one of the Barossa's most prized locations, combined with old-vine fruit from the 1930s. The age of these vines contributes remarkable concentration and complexity that younger plantings simply cannot achieve. The classic GSM blend (Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre) allows each variety to contribute its strengths - Grenache's bright fruit, Shiraz's structure, and Mourvèdre's earthy complexity - creating a wine that exemplifies traditional Barossa winemaking at its finest.

While deliciously approachable now with its vibrant fruit expression, this wine will reward patience over the next 5-8 years. The old-vine intensity and French oak integration suggest excellent aging potential, with the current youthful plum and berry flavours gradually evolving into more complex secondary characteristics. The high ratings (96pts Vinomasters, 95pts Wine Orbit) indicate a wine built for longevity, though the temptation to drink it young is understandable given its immediate appeal.

The wine's meaty, blackberry characteristics and full-bodied structure make it perfect for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, beef brisket, or game meats. The spiciness mentioned in the tasting notes complements Mediterranean cuisine beautifully - think herb-crusted leg of lamb or rich ragu pasta. The French oak integration and tannin structure also pair excellently with aged cheeses, particularly hard varieties like aged cheddar or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

The 2023 vintage in the Barossa produced wines with exceptional balance between power and elegance, allowing the old-vine character to truly shine through. This particular wine demonstrates how the vintage's conditions preserved the natural acidity while developing rich fruit concentration. The fact that it's already receiving such high critical acclaim (including Five Stars from Wine Orbit) suggests 2023 may be remembered as an outstanding year for Barossa reds, particularly for traditional blends like GSM.

Old-school Barossa GSM refers to traditional winemaking approaches that emphasise fruit purity, balanced oak use, and patient maturation. This style typically involves careful blending of the three varietals to create harmony rather than dominance by any single grape, extended aging in quality French oak (as used here), and allowing the wine's natural structure to develop without over-manipulation. The result is a wine that speaks of place and tradition, with the complexity and integration that comes from time-honoured techniques rather than modern shortcuts.
