Halliday Wine Companion described this as "One of those wines that, when you drink your last bottle 6–10 years from now, you'll wish you had more of". We reckon that pretty much hits the nail on the head, complex and brooding yet bright and light-footed. Too good to drink, too good not to. A blessing and a curse!

Why do we love this wine?

A 95pt Halliday rating and 4.1 Vivino score confirm what we already suspected, both reviewers and punters are falling in love with this wine left, right and centre. Jump on it while you can, these never last long. 2023 was a bit of a ripper vintage, for the Yarra at least, and the result is soft yet generous pinot noir with wonderfully vibrant acidity and enduring fruit. Think ripe cherries and fresh strawberries with an underlying earthiness and lingering velvety tannins. This has Yarra Valley pinot written all over it and with 2 or 3 years under its belt, this little number is raring and ready to go, with a loooooong life ahead of it.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

From a 2ha vineyard at Nillumbik and planted in '76, '98 and '03. 10% whole bunches, minimal new oak. A bright, medium ruby red. A lovely bouquet with perfumed, ripe red cherry, peony and a little incense. Medium bodied, this is fragrant and textured on the palate while tannins are velvety and rich. One of those wines that, when you drink your last bottle 6–10 years from now, you'll wish you had more of!

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2023 vintage was exceptional for the Yarra Valley, producing wines with remarkable balance and intensity. This particular vintage showcases the ideal conditions that allowed the grapes to develop concentrated flavors while maintaining the elegant acidity that Yarra Valley Pinot Noir is renowned for. The result is a wine that's both immediately approachable yet built for long-term cellaring, demonstrating the vintage's ability to produce wines with both power and finesse.

This Pinot Noir is already drinking beautifully after 2-3 years of bottle age, having developed the complexity that makes Yarra Valley wines so sought-after. However, given its excellent structure and the quality of the 2023 vintage, it has the potential to evolve gracefully for another 8-10 years. The wine's velvety tannins and vibrant acidity provide the backbone needed for extended aging, during which the cherry and strawberry notes will integrate further with the earthy undertones.

The textured, savory profile with cherry and spice notes makes this an ideal match for duck breast with cherry gastrique or lamb with herbs de Provence. The wine's medium body and earthy undertones also complement mushroom-based dishes beautifully, while its bright acidity cuts through rich, creamy sauces. For cheese pairings, try it with aged Gruyère or a soft-ripened cheese like Camembert to highlight the wine's elegant fruit-forward character.

Single vineyard designation means all grapes come from one specific site - in this case, Lance's Vineyard - rather than being blended from multiple locations. This allows the wine to express the unique terroir characteristics of that particular plot, including its soil composition, microclimate, and elevation. Lance's Vineyard clearly produces exceptional fruit, as evidenced by the wine's 95-point ratings, and single vineyard wines often show more distinct personality and sense of place than regional blends.

The convergence of 95-point scores from both Halliday Wine Companion and Wine Pilot, plus the Halliday Special Value Award, indicates exceptional quality at its price point. Critics are recognizing the wine's perfect expression of Yarra Valley terroir - the balance of ripe fruit, earthy complexity, and structural integrity that defines great Pinot Noir. The fact that it's also resonating with everyday wine drinkers (4.1 Vivino score) suggests it achieves that rare combination of critical excellence and broad appeal.
