Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This robust, textural drop is absolutely singing right now and we're inviting anyone and everyone to join the chorus. Concentration, complexity and a dense texture built off the back of 13 months in 50% new French oak. The dark fruit, initially shy, has grown in confidence and power to become the pristine, brooding backbone of this richly-rewarding wine. To those who think Aussie pinots aren't worth aging we say this, think again... this is just hitting its stride with a looooong journey ahead of it.

Jeni Port

This is sourced off the Yarra Valley’s first close planted vineyard created by the winemaker’s parents in 1989 – all up, 2100 vines on .25ha. The wine offers a strong argument for close planting which can produce smaller berries and bunches and give overall better crop load balance. This is one impressively complex and exciting wine. There is a seamless integration of fruit, tannin and acidity. It just comes across with almost effortless balance, smooth, velvety and yet with power. Black berries, rich spices including allspice, aniseed and vanilla. Has Yarra Valley succulence written all over it, a quiet richness.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine challenges preconceptions about Australian Pinot Noir's ageing potential with its robust, textural profile built from 13 months in 50% new French oak. The close-planted vineyard technique increases vine competition, resulting in more concentrated fruit flavours and complex tannin structure. Unlike lighter, drink-now styles, this Yarra Valley expression demonstrates the serious longevity that premium Australian Pinot can achieve when crafted with Old World techniques.

While already drinking beautifully now, this wine is designed for extended cellaring with a 'looooong journey ahead'. The combination of old vine fruit, close planting density, and substantial oak treatment suggests a 10-15 year drinking window. The dark fruit profile will continue evolving, developing secondary earthy and gamey characteristics typical of aged Pinot Noir, while the oak integration will become more seamless over time.

The wine's savoury, textural profile and cherry-clove-strawberry spectrum make it ideal for duck breast with cherry gastrique or lamb with herbs de Provence. The medium body and French oak influence complement mushroom-based dishes beautifully, while the wine's concentration can stand up to aged cheeses like Camembert or Roquefort. The spice notes from cloves particularly enhance game birds and charcuterie.

Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create ideal conditions for producing complex, age-worthy Pinot Noir like this Lance's Vineyard expression. The region's diurnal temperature variation preserves natural acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness, essential for the wine's textural depth. As one of Australia's premier Pinot regions, Yarra Valley consistently produces wines that rival Burgundy in elegance while maintaining distinctive Australian character.

A 97-point rating from Wine Pilot places this wine in exceptional territory, indicating near-perfect execution across all quality parameters including varietal expression, balance, and ageing potential. This score, combined with Punch's Five Star Halliday winery rating, confirms the producer's consistent excellence in crafting premium Pinot Noir. Such high ratings typically reflect wines that showcase both immediate appeal and long-term cellaring prospects, justifying serious collector interest.
