We've been saying it for years, and we will die on this hill - Yarra Valley cabernet is the most underrated wine in Australia. This wine typifies the style beautifully. Deep, concentrated, complex and structured, yet plush and packed with fruit generosity. 95pts from Halliday Wine Companion doesn't do it justice.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

A deep plummy red in the glass, this Yarra stunner is packed with cassis, blackberry, dark chocolate and freshly-turned earth, all with that classic cigar box note dancing in behind. A tight, structured core of fine tannins and bright acidity promises years of graceful development, but there’s already plenty to love if you’re swirling this in your glass right now. Aromatically, it’s got tomato leaf, wild herbs and briar, all the classic varietal notes, and a plushness beginning to build across the mid-palate. Dense, detailed, and immaculately structured, it’s still in its youth but showing clear signs of greatness to come. Cellar it if you want , this will reward the patience, but drinking now will bring plenty of joy.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

From a tiny 4ha vineyard planted in '76. A deep, crimson red, this is just a touch lighter and leafier than the '22. Aromas of red and black fruits together with a little bell pepper and violets can be found in this medium-bodied, fragrant and nicely poised wine. This is a wine that will be provide a considerable amount of pleasure over the next 6–8 years. Only 49 dozen produced.

Frequently Asked Questions

This single vineyard Cabernet showcases the cooler climate elegance that Yarra Valley is renowned for, delivering the varietal's classic structure with a distinctly Australian character. The combination of dense fruit concentration and bright acidity reflects the region's ability to produce Cabernet with both power and finesse. James Halliday's 95-point rating and Special Value Award recognition confirms this wine punches well above its weight class, offering premium quality at an accessible price point.

While delicious now, this structured Cabernet is built for the long haul with its tight tannin core and bright acidity acting as natural preservatives. The 2023 vintage will likely hit its stride in 5-8 years when the tannins soften and the complex aromatics fully integrate. However, the wine's current plushness developing across the mid-palate means early drinkers won't be disappointed - it's one of those rare wines that offers pleasure at every stage of its evolution.

The wine's savoury profile with tomato leaf and wild herb notes makes it a natural partner for herb-crusted lamb or beef dishes. The cigar box and dark chocolate characters complement aged cheeses beautifully, while the bright acidity cuts through rich, fatty meats like duck or venison. The earthy undertones also pair wonderfully with mushroom-based dishes or anything featuring rosemary and thyme.

The rhubarb character likely comes from the wine's bright acidity and the cooler Yarra Valley climate, which preserves fresh fruit characters alongside the traditional dark berry flavours. Spice notes in Cabernet often develop from oak treatment and the natural tannin structure, creating complexity beyond simple fruit flavours. This combination of fresh and savoury elements is what gives quality cool-climate Cabernet its distinctive personality and food-friendly nature.

James Halliday's five-star rating represents the pinnacle of Australian winery recognition, awarded only to producers consistently delivering exceptional quality across their range. This rating indicates Punch has demonstrated outstanding winemaking expertise, vineyard management, and commitment to excellence over multiple vintages. For consumers, it's a reliable indicator that you're buying from a producer at the top of their game, with this single vineyard Cabernet representing their premium tier.
