Possibly Pirramimma's most well-known wine. Although it might be a stretch to say that Pirramimma made Australian petit verdot famous, it's certainly not in dispute that they were one of the first to master it.

Why do we love this wine?

Pirramimma are experts in powerful McLaren Vale petit verdot. Their Ironstone vineyard is comprised of old vines trained on low trellises. This means high concentration of flavour and very low yields. So they take these dark, dense grapes, crush and ferment them into wine, and put them to rest for 28 months in French oak (40% new). There’s blueberry, star anise, kalamata olive, black cherry and bramble, all enveloped by plentiful savoury oak. The tannins are firm, the oak harmonious and the fruit muscular. Petit verdot is about to find some new fans...

Frequently Asked Questions

Petit Verdot is one of the most intensely coloured and structured grape varieties in the world, originally from Bordeaux where it was used sparingly as a blending component. In warmer climates like McLaren Vale, it develops extraordinary concentration and complexity as a standalone varietal. The grape's thick skins produce wines with almost inky darkness and powerful tannins, while its late ripening nature means it develops intense flavours of dark fruits, spices, and savoury elements that make it perfect for wine lovers seeking something bold and distinctive.

Old vines naturally produce smaller yields but with dramatically increased flavour concentration, as the mature root systems access deeper soil nutrients and the vines focus their energy into fewer, more intense grapes. The low trellis system at Pirramimma's Ironstone vineyard further restricts yields while exposing the fruit to optimal sun exposure, creating the perfect storm for maximum flavour development. This combination results in grapes with exceptional depth and complexity that simply cannot be achieved with younger, high-yielding vines.

Extended oak ageing is essential for taming Petit Verdot's naturally powerful tannins while adding layers of complexity to the wine's already intense fruit profile. French oak, particularly with 40% new barrels, contributes subtle vanilla, spice, and structural elements that complement rather than overpower the grape's inherent characteristics. The lengthy 28-month maturation allows the wine's various components - fruit, tannins, and oak - to marry harmoniously, creating the balanced yet muscular wine that has earned such impressive critical acclaim including 95 points from Sam Kim.

This wine's robust tannins and savoury complexity make it an ideal match for rich, protein-heavy dishes that can stand up to its intensity. Think grilled lamb with Mediterranean herbs, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the wine's olive and spice notes will complement the savoury elements beautifully. The wine's bramble and black cherry characteristics also pair wonderfully with dishes featuring dark fruits or balsamic reductions, while its firm structure can handle strongly flavoured cheeses and charcuterie.

Given Petit Verdot's naturally high tannin structure and this wine's extended oak maturation, the 2018 vintage has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years from vintage date. The wine's current power and concentration suggest it will continue to evolve and integrate beautifully over time, with the firm tannins gradually softening while the complex fruit and oak elements develop greater harmony. However, it's already drinking magnificently now for those who enjoy bold, structured wines, as evidenced by its outstanding critical reception across multiple wine publications.
